Top 5 Most Annoying Mario Games

Postby shotblue » Wed Sep 05, 2012 5:12 pm

I've got to say:

Mario is Missing (educational crap)
Mario's Time Machine (educational crap)
Super Mario 2 (Based on the origins and there seems to be too many elements that are cheaply frustrating and always seemed kinda foreign to the original mario series)
Japanese Mario 2 (too hard)
Mario's Game Gallery (marketing crap)

I got EXTREMELY frustrated with Mario Sunshine...I liked the idea of the jetpack but it frustrated me to no end.

I thought I would get lynched by Mario fans by saying it but yes I agree! out of all the 3D platformer Mario titles the only one I cannot get on with is Super Mario Sunshine, I did not enjoy the FLUDD dynamic of play, the camera was awful in places and I just did not get the enjoyment out of it like I did Super Mario 64 or Super Mario Galaxy.

Sunshine is undoubtedly a good game but it is also the only Mario I have played (I haven't played them all mind) that didn't make me feel that failure was always my own fault. Too many fiddly challenges, an irritating camera and several unforgoving areas. Who can forget trying to clear up all that slime on the ghost hotel level in such an evil time limit? The red coin pinball thing with lots of unfair deaths and a terrible viewpoint? Or painstakingly getting Yoshi across those boats to a secret challenge on a small island...only to have to do it all again if you mucked the challenge up and died too much.

I got around 60 or so of the Shines and enjoyed the game for the most part (some of the levels had impressive scale) but compared to Mario 64, the Galaxy games or even 3D Land, it sticks out like a sore, weird and often cruel thumb.

I'd have to agree about Sunshine being a disappointment. It wasn't a bad game, but it seemed to forget what made its predecessor, Super Mario 64, such a phenomenon. The great thing about Super Mario 64 was that, of 120 available stars, you only needed 70 to get to the end boss. Additionally, most stars could be obtained out of sequence, so if getting one star was giving you trouble, you could take a breather and try a different star or a different level, then come back to the troublesome ones later. Sunshine required you to have a 70% clearance rate in each level, which meant that it you found trying to fire a cannon from a moving rollercoaster disorienting then too bad. Bowser was a cake walk compared to maintaining equilibrium in the MechaBowser fight.

Oh, and I love SMBUSA even if it is a reskin of Doki Doki Panic.
