Dreamcast Woes...

Postby Zurenriri » Fri Aug 31, 2012 2:46 am

Hey guys, new member here.
Quick background info: I moved out of my parents' house in May 2011. They were always pretty strict about the video games I could own, so when I moved out, all I had was a PS2 and 9 games. After moving into my new place, I decided to start collecting, and in just over a year's time I've expanded my collection significantly.

So, today while I was digging through a thrift store, I found a Sega Dreamcast. After buying a Genesis last month (my first Sega console) and having a blast with it, I figured I should get the Dreamcast. This one came with all the cables, two controllers, a game (Evolution: The World Of Sacred Device), two memory cards, a VMU, a GameShark, and a keyboard. I got the whole package for $16.50 (GBP 10.45).

But... it looks like it may have been too good to be true. One of the controllers has no response from the analog stick, and the console itself has serious trouble reading discs. I cannot get the game that came with it to go past the title screen before the Dreamcast goes back to its BIOS. Not to mention that it's extremely noisy when it tries to read the disc. It won't play music CDs at all. I'm pretty certain the game disc is not at fault as it is scratch-free and my computer can read it just fine.

The controller I can replace for under 5 dollars, but I haven't found another Dreamcast for less than $30 in my area. I know that's not a lot, but I'm a student and I have to make every dollar count. :/ So do you think I should try to repair my Dreamcast, or replace it? Or... (sadface)... give up and try to sell it to try to recoup my losses?

EDIT: Here's some photos because why not
(linking because they're pretty large)

Referring to #3 and #4... that brown gooey stuff isn't near the laser, but maybe if I cleaned it up it would work? Hmm... what do you think? I'm afraid to try to clean near the laser because I'm afraid I'll permanently damage it. :(

That mould around it, maybe its been kept somewhere damp... If so I would assume its pretty rusted and hence buggered... I would just clean it up as careful as you can... I recon its buggered though... what you go to loose...

Great machine though the Dreamcast, for sure you should get one at some point...

Well, a little update here. I decided to play it again last night. It's still sounds like an electric drill when the disc first spins up, but it actually works! I didn't change anything, just turned it on and it started playing, and it ran until I decided to turn it off more than 30 minutes later. I'll probably still give it a good cleaning later this weekend.

What games would you recommend I should be on the lookout for? :)

Don't worry to much about the drill like noise, the dreamcast is a notoriously noisy console

If you're gaming on a budget then the best cheapest games for the Dreamcast are Sonic Adventure, Sonic Adventure 2 and Jet Set Radio (think it's called Jet Grind Radio in the states) which you can get for about $5-$10 each and are very common.

If you're into RPGs and willing to spend a bit more then Skies of Arcadia and Grandia II are fantastic games each of which are probably around $25-$35.

If you're after something a bit more unique then Shenmue is the way to go and probably one of the best games for the Dreamcast although it'll cost you $30+

If you're into fighters then anything by Capcom, doesn't matter which one you won't be disappointed the Dreamcast is one of the better consoles for 2D fighting especially by Capcom.

Hope it helps and good luck trying to get it working properly :D

RPGs are definitely my favorite type of games, so I'll get as many of those as I can. I've actually played Shenmue once when I was younger and it was pretty good if I remember correctly. I would get Grandia I/II except I already have those on the PS1 and PS2.
Sonic games are always a must have so if I can find them cheap, I'll grab them. Unfortunately, Dreamcast games are among the hardest to find (of the mainstream consoles) at the places I shop. Some stores won't even take them. The ones I do find are usually ultra-common sports games.
As for fighters... man, I suck at fighters. I only have three in my entire collection: Killer Instinct (SNES), Mortal Kombat (GB), and Soul Calibur II (PS2). With the exception of the last one, I got them all for free.

I'm no scientist, but... yeah. I think it is. o__O;; However, it's not the dirtiest thing I've found while game hunting. One time I came across a PS2 controller that was covered in pet hair and some kind of sticky substance.

If RPGs are your thing then the Dreamcast probably isn't the best system to go for in terms of RPGs, it has Skies of Arcadia, Granida 2, Evolution 1 and 2 and Time Stalkers and that's about it all of which (apart from Time Stalkers) have been ported to other consoles (mostly Gamecube) and that's including the Sonic games and the ported version are actually the better versions and more common. But Skies of Arcadia and Shenmue are worth having a Dreamcast for they're exceptional games you won't be disappointed Skies of Arcadia is my favourite game next to Final Fantasy VII and I'm an RPG nut myself :)

Are you into racing? Dreamcast is a great system for racing games you should look into Crazy Taxi, Daytona USA 2001, Sega Rally Champion and they're super cheap and common on ebay or online retro stores.

I'm going for a full PAL Dreamcast set so I know my way around Dreamcast games so if there's anything you need to know on what games to get let me know and I'll recommend you some good ones :D

Awesome. And yeah even if there aren't that many RPGs on the system, I still don't regret buying a Dreamcast. And I love racing games. I'm actually playing F-Zero GX right now. ^^
