Anyone collect based on how the game cases look.

I have to admit I have in the past and still do now.

I have completely lost interst in collecting Saturn PAL games and started collecting The Japanese versions simply because I love the the Single jewel cases and artwork of the Japanese games. Especially when you put them in plastic sleaves with the spine card in place.

Same reason I have bought a SuperGrafx, I have bought one and am buying games on it simply because I have always loved the look of the Hu-cards.

Same with Gamecube, Great games but the boxes always seemd cheap ( I generally Dislike DVD boxes for games anyway )and some of the pal artwork was awfull. Then I discovered the Joy that was the Japanese Gamecube packaging. So much better looking than the Pal stuff.

Not to mention Nintendo Stuff, I know its flimsy and does not last, but hands down I think the NES, Snes, and N64 cardboard boxes look the best.

Whats everybody elses preference.

Original gameboy games have some fantastic box art, plus there is 1000+ of them, and then the Japanese releases have even better box art most of the time!

Japanese games for the most part looks better, but i like games where i can understand the text, so i keep my collection mostly to PAL releases, i do however have a couple of japanese gamecube games and ds games, but only titles that was not released in europe or usa as far as i know, would love to learn to read japanese one day, but seems kinda hard to learn since they have different letters, and for the nes, snes, n64 and other cardboard boxed games, i don't mind buying carts of the games i want to play, but if i can get them boxed without paying to much, i would go for the boxed version, so for my part it is mostly about what is cheapest to get

If your a master system collector you only have a choice between grid and more grid mainly

It has a charm to it though. The uniformity, nostalgia and such
The past is where it's at

I understand what you mean, as much as I dislike dealing with imports in general North American Dreamcast games are more interesting to me just because you have easily replaceable CD cases rather than those wretched space-consuming crunchers the PAL games come in. I have a US copy of Cannon Spike (happened to find it on a flea-market) and a Japanese copy of Power Stone, if I can source more import games cheaply I'll forget about collecting PAL games for that particular system and get a freeplayer disc.

The PAL Dreamcast cases would be more durable if they were made of glass. And the PAL Saturn mix of cardboard and a stupid plastic piece that never quite holds the disc properly, is horrible.

So yes, I stick to JP/US when it comes to Sega systems based on disc medias. My collection is very much based on how the game cases look/feel/behave. I have a flaming hatred for cardboard boxed. The only thing that makes me warm and fuzzy inside is a good quality plastic clam shell (not the crappy ones that EA used for their MegaDrive releases).

Yes i do all the time, thats part of the reason why i started the sonic collection, the game box art is absolutely brilliant, particularly the earlier games. and the japanese art work is simply excellent.

In a strange way I think the PSP games looks like miniature PS2 games - so that could be a reason! Other than the fact there are lots of amazing and unique games on there.

Also I'll try and collect PSVita eventually - they're even smaller

Ultramagnus I'm with you on the HUcards, love those things. But when it comes to game cases I would have to say I like the uniform look of the Master system cases. I have around 90 at the minute and they look pretty sweet on my shelves :D

I brought a model 1 Saturn a little while back which came with the 4 pal games I currently own it was a bit of a surprise when I got it, honestly I was not expecting the cardboard/plastic hybrid cases (i guess i had only watched us collection videos). I was expecting nice jewel cases so I'm considering going for Japanese/Us releases simply for aesthetics

I actually hate the US saturn cases. I love the artwork on the Japanese ones though.

Ive been guilty of this, I bought a SNES mystical ninja because of the artwork on the box

having said that when I played the game I was pleasantly suprized - its a great game !, but I only bought it for the artwork

I also bought SNES mario world in the yellow box just to own one as I thought it would look nice in my collection, I dont know why & I paid a lot of money for it, I sold it on to buy a game I wanted as it was purely for show & I already had completed the game several times !

I have been tempted in the past to collect older big box PC games as some of them look awesome.
