Surprise Rare games you already owned.

Its so hard to keep track of whats rare, expensive and whats not. Especially if like me you collect for about 15-20 different consoles.

When I left school in 94 I boxed all my old consoles up and left them. I was still into gaming but not the older stuff, although I always had emulators setup whenever I needed a nostalgia fix.

I got back into retro gaming a little while back and got all my consoles sorted and started playing on them again. I was just doing it for fun but had far too many so decided to get a few quid for some. Now I had no idea that there was such a collectors market and was shocked when some of my NES, SNES games started fetching silly prices ( or at least I thought )

Thanks to sites like this I have started to get a handle on the prices and cant believe the rare games I already own.

I actually listed Panzer dragoon saga, suikoden II, Tombi, Castlevania III, megaman X on Ebay. I nearly let them go to someone who " generously " ( in his words ) offered me £10 if I would end the autions. ( they apparently werent worth that much but he was willing to pay " over the odds " as a way of saying thank you for ending early )

Luckily I did a little research, **** my pants and have been collecting ever since.

So has anyone else has any expensive games just lying around without any clue that they were rare and sought after.

Unfortunately, I don't own any extremely rare games, unlike you, when I left school in 94, instead of boxing up my consoles, I traded them in, sold them & swapped them!!!!!

This was due to me discovering cars & girls! (& illegal substances)

I was a fool, even though I've bought & sold numerous retro consoles & games since 2005, you just can't beat having owned a particular console from day one.

Anything rare that ends up in my collection now will have been purchased as a rare item & I will have unfortunately paid the price for it!

I only owned one Gameboy game (Pokemon Red) in childhood, the rest was borrowed from friends or the public library, and I didn't own a console until 14 years old (the PS2). So yeah.

Well, not particularly rare nor super common, but when I got back into retro collecting I had all the original PAL Final Fantasy games on the Playstation, both PAL Zelda's on the N64, and an Action 52 and Aero the Acrobat 2 on the Mega Drive. I'd been emulating for years prior, and basically forgot I owned them until I dusted them off!

Sold them all and imported the Japanese versions, and consoles, for a fraction of the cost with plenty of money left over. At the time it made perfect sense - I prefer to collect something I will actually use, and the slow PAL game speed makes my brains dribble out of my nose.

Now, though, I kinda miss having them!

i was born in the early 80s so at one time or anouther have owned most gaming computer/consoles over a 30(ish) year period. like you i had no idea there was a market for this stuff. when buying my first place i needed to scale down a few things so placed almost my entire gaming collection on ebay without checking prices. i hardly used ebay at the time, so when quite shocked to look at it 5 days later after just selling equipment and games id estimated would be worth £100 if i was lucky, to find id cleared neary 1k!
Looking at prices now, 1k is appaling compared to what it would have cost if id have split it though :( . so in answear to your question, i was supprised anything i owned had any value at-all!
worst off all i had "skipped" a zx81 and given away a dreamcast plus 30 games to a family memebr!

Parodius PS1 pal seems quite rare. I didn't even realise and have no idea what it is worth.

Mystical Ninja 2 starring Goemon for the N64 was one of my biggest surprises. Brought it from Game back in the day when they were having a clearance, brand new for a tenner. It wasn't till I joined this site that I released how rare it was and how much it goes for now.

Terranigma. I know it's not rare here, but it has a quasi cult following seeing as it wasn't released in the US.

When I first got into retro gaming I stumbled upon two copies of The Lion King for the Nintendo NES both factory sealed. £1.99 each. Being young I thought nothing of it and got just one copy for myself.

I kept it factory sealed because it was a pretty cool addition to the (at the time) small collection, one which turned out to be a nice little rarity. It's still sealed and sitting proud amongst my NES games as we speak :)

pocky & rocky 2 for the snes

I had this stored in a draw for many yrs not knowing its value - I sold it on to help buy the donkey kong crate which Ive always wanted & was abit shocked to what people would pay for it

I was also given (free of charge) a PAL terranigma for the SNES in mint condition but had no interest in it, this was yrs ago & again I was suprized to its value / cult status

Not really a rare games, yet uncommon. Legend, Tintin in Tibet, and Captain America & the Avengers were my first SNES games.

Wish I hadn't sold my N64 + games to raise money for Gamecube games when I was a kid, bought back or been given as gifts most of the stuff I had that was worth having, but a few games that're now not easy to come by cheap went with it - such as Mario Party 2.

Quite a few GC games I've traded in too which I'll buy back when I see them cheap enough, though some I already had have turned out to be quite valuable now I've taken more of an interest in collecting as well as playing.

Got one of those Action Replay Max things in the tin with a memory card, which my older brother bought because he was having trouble completing Resident Evil, got a copy of Tales of Symphonia which my nan got me one Christmas.
