What's your favorite Mario Kart game?

After miserably making it to 2nd place all the time in my new game Mario Kart 64, I decided to ask you guys what your favorite Mario Kart game. I vote for Mario Kart 7.

Mario Kart 64 and Wii for me, I remember back in the day 4 people battles in my mates front room, great memories and loads of fun.

Mario Kart 64 for me too, though back then I was always more partial to Diddy Kong Racing just for the planes and hoverboats element.

The SNES original.

I appreciate it's only my personal opinion, but for me, Mario Kart on the main consoles has just got progressively worse. The GameCube and Wii games I feel are broken and not a patch on the SNES original. The cheating AI racers in the last two console Mario Kart's really took any fun out of these games for me personally. However, the handheld Mario Karts are closer to the SNES original and are enjoyable. The multiplayer races do even things up a bit on Wii and GC, so there are redeeming factors.

As for the N64 version? Well, you will all know by now what I think of the N64 - but I still prefer the SNES game over the N64 game (especially as the N64 had Diddy Kong Racing and the awesome Snowboard Kids, both of which I rate higher than Mario Kart 64) but I did enjoy the N64 game with friends back in the day. Despite increasingly poorer reviews with each iteration in the series, Nintendo seems to be intent on creating Mario Kart games that feature unbalanced fairness( for example with power ups - you red shell a leading AI racer and go flat out for 2 bends, but the racer you shelled overtakes you 2 bends later - however, you get red shelled by an AI racer and it takes you half a perfect lap to get alongside them again). The GameCube and Wii Mario Kart's feel like they have been play-tested by 10 year olds who are only interested in how the games look. I just wish Nintendo read the reviews, took the criticism on board and made a game more like the sublime original (Mario Kart Wii got something like four out of ten in Edge and five out of ten in GAMEStm if I recall).

I'll say Double Dash is my favourite gameplay-wise, though the SNES original holds more nostalgic value. DD's two-player-per-kart mechanic is just a blast with a friend and the improved drifting/turbo just makes the races seem faster and more reckless. I know speed isn't the main draw of Mario Kart, but as a racing fan I love it.

Honestly though, if I could I'd be voting for Diddy Kong Racing!

I thought the SNES version would win hands down, as that's the clear choice, nice to see though that people are just not that predictable

I worked in Tandy years ago, and Mario Kart came in (just one copy, no wonder they went bust) and I was in love, boy me and that game had some good times.

Few years later the N64 came out, I could purchase it (said the wife) but only with one game, and that would have to do me till Christmas (still 4 months away).... Oooo do I get Mario64 or Mario Kart, it was tuff, but I went for Mario Kart (Mario64 was first on the Xmas list). So that's the only game I had for months, and it was good, real good, in fact better than the first one.

I still play it now on the N64, and even my daughters rather keen on it, just adding to its clear vote and my Number 1 Mario Kart game.

Stinkers I dont think there is any, but Double Dash never really dont it for me, and the new Wii one, well that bloody controller cheeses me off no end, using the classic controller saves it.

So for me Double Dash is the worse version...

I had the SNES version and it is fantastic but it never had the replayability for me and my mates that 64 did. Much like my fond memories of Goldeneye you just can' t beat you and a ton of mates all taking turns to have a go/winner stays on/screwing each other over, etc.

64 was brilliant, saying that I didn't actually mind Double Dash and remembed it getting a bit of a panning by fans of the series. Never played 7 as I don't yet own a 3ds but could pick it up one day and give it a bash.

7 is the only one I don't own either as a physical release or on Virtual Console. Here's my opinion on best to worst of the rest:

Mariokart 64 without a doubt.

its funny because I have so much disposable income now and have so many games I tend to burn myself out on them and just dont get as much out of them anymore.

Back when I was in college I had a N64, money was tight and all me and my friends had for months was the console and 3 games. Goldeneye, ISS64, and Mariokart 64. those 3 games kept us going for months without ever getting bored.

I guess sometimes its worth having limitations enforced upon you as it tends to make you appreciate things more and get the most out of them. Never will I enjoy games more than the NES, Snes/Megadrive, and N64 days.

Mario Kart 64 all the way for me spent so many hours doing time trails on that game just trying to get better and better and shave a few seconds off of my times, no short cuts either even though a few were accepted in competitive play, but I loved it it is also the only Mario game I beat all he Grand Prix Mode and the staff ghosts I spent that much time playing it too I used to get frustrated at not doing perfect laps.

Mario Kart 64 for me as well. Me and my brother spent so much time memorising the courses, shortcuts etc. on that game.

The DS game for me. While being solid enough, the 3DS game felt a bit 'meh' and the rubber-banding of the CPU was especially frustrating when trying to earn the gold trophies in each cup. In the DS game, you can powerslide your way to the front and not be too badly effected by the blue shells, lightning etc. but it's a different story MK7.

Double Dash!! is okay and pretty fun in a multi-player session where nobody takes it seriously but the handling of the karts is a bit floaty for my liking.

Double Dash is my fav with SNES and Wii version close second and third place.

I have Mario Kart 64 but for some reason I'm not really liking it very much.

i prefer the wii version but played a load of mario kart 64 back in the day, just borrowed me brothers DS so i will give that version a blast aswell.

Double Dash all the way. It was the first time I played 4 player with my friends. The N64 version really didn't do it for me.

I realise this is all just opinion, but I'm shocked so many people prefer the N64 version. The only advantage it has over the SNES version is it has a 4 player mode. Other than that I think it's worse in every way. Less tight track design, cheaper AI and dirtier rubber-band physics. Don't even get me started on Rainbow Road. The game gets worse with every successive version IMO too.
The only exception to this is Super Circuit, which I feel is the only one that even comes close to being anywhere near as fun as the SNES version. I can only hope it got so few votes because no-one played it.
I agree with gunstarhero, Diddy Kong Racing is far superior to Mario Kart 64.

Mario kart Wii edition is my favorite now but the old SNES version brings back a lot of childhood memories. As much I enjoy playing Mario games now - the joy was obviously greater some years back.
