Good RPG / Zelda-alike games on the MD?

Postby Pondis » Mon Jun 25, 2012 10:51 am

Hi all

Im looking for a decent Zelda clone or nice long RPG on the MD.

I do have Phantasy star 2, not that I have had a lot of time to play lately.

So, any ideas?

Zelda ist not a RPG ;) Anyways, if you want Zelda, I think Soleil and Story of Thor are the right games to look into.

Maybe not in the strictest sense, but a lot of period gaming mags always seemed to refer to Zelda as a RPG 8-)

thats why its RPG / Zelda alike! I hate it when people refer to Zelda as RPG, its adventure with RPG elements at best.

I have been looking for Soliel but it commands a high prince on eBay

Already mentioned but Soleil is close as you're going to get to Zelda on the Mega Drive.

Yep - agree with that

2011 release Pier Solar worthy of a shout too - still available by the looks of things

I was about to say Crusader of Centy because that's an awesome game, but then I realized that Soleil is its EU name.

So go with Soleil ;)

Soleil doesn't get nearly enough love, so I'll jump on the bandwagon and recommend that.

If you've got a PS3 or Xbox 360, the Megadrive Ultimate Collection has 4 Phantasy Stars, 2 Shining Forces & Story of Thor, all for about a tenner. Plus loads of other wicked sh!t, too.
Bargain.

I always thought that Story of Thor/Beyond Oasis was super overrated. To me the game was really bland... Might have something to do with the soundtrack.

I do have the Sega collection, but it feels so wrong playing retro games with a 360 pad.

I recently bought
Sword Of Vermillion
Shining In The Darkness
Buck Rogers
Might & Magic
Phantasy Star 3

for £30 on ebay which I am looking forward to firing up!

My favourite Mega Drive game is Wonder Boy in Monster World :)

WikiPedia wrote:It controls like your standard platform game: run, jump, and kill enemies. The game is filled with Adventure elements close to the ones in the legend of Zelda such as talking to townsfolk, collecting money to buy items, extending your life bar by collecting hearts, and equipping a large variety of armor, weapons and magic.

Shion travels through the many interconnected regions of Monster World, all the while collecting increasingly powerful equipment in the form of many different swords, spears, shields, suits of armor, and boots.

To top it all off one of the items you'll need is an ocarina :D

although I've not played it for many years, I recall Rings of Power being one of my favorite RPG's on the Megadrive (Monsterworld feels like a given and is what I'd refer to as Sega's equivalent of Zelda for the MegaDrive)

if nothing else, you could get a Master System converter and play Golden Axe Warrior which is like LoZ, but awesomer!
