Turbografx 16 collectors unite!

Postby Niteowl 2010 » Sat May 05, 2012 5:04 pm

I was wondering how many people on the forums own a turbografx or pc engine or any of the duo systems, and what are peoples favorite games on those systems.
I bought a new, old stock turbografx from ninjas castle about 7 months ago and have been pleasantly surprised with it, I have five games so far cratermaze, china warrior, vigilante, victory run and the pack in title blazing lazers. I am especially enjoying blazing lazers as I am a fan of super aleste on the snes and had no idea that it was so similar.
I have four titles in the post that I purchased this weekend, bonks revenge, new adventure island, bomberman and alien crush, I can't wait to try them out.
I think that at some I am going to attempt to make my own converter at some point to play pc engine titles, as I dont think I am prepared to pay upwards of £50 to buy an official converter, after all it only changes the pin arrangement! :(
So Turbografx collectors unite and share your pics, views and collection story's on this thread and hopefully we can get the mighty Turbografx added to the game database. :P

I want one, but I don''t which kind to buy. What are the options and which is the best? Are they region locked?
I won''t be buying the expensive stuff, at least not right away, but I'd like to be able to buy and play most of the stuff.

Some help on this subject would be most helpful!

I have wanted some sort of PC engine console fora ges now. I finally got on a couple of weeks back and got a brilliant deal.

SuperGrafx fully boxed in great condition with Stepdown convertor and Darius plus + Granzort with it. all for a bargain £41

Normally boxed consoles go for much much more and granzort normally goes for more than I paid for the lot.

Then I bought a Bulklot of loose Hucards from a Japanese seller. they were advertised as untested but they all ended up working. 50 games for around £50. included was the likes of Victory Run, R-type, Legendary Axe, Moto Roader, Dungeon Explorer, Dragon Spirit, Space Harrier, Power Drift ETC.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TurboGrafx-16 - Pretty much covers everything you need to know.

The original white PC-Engine(Very cool looking) is by far the cheapest option, but you'll have to RGB mod. Then next up is the PC-Engine Core Grafx & Core Grafx II which both have AV out, but they cost a lot more.

To play US games on a Japanese PC-Engine you'll have to buy a convertor. I don't think the actual consoles themselves are region locked but the games are. There were less they 100 games for the TurboGrafx-16, so buying a PC-Engine is better in my opinion.

Plus the TurboGrafx-16 consoles are humongous look ugly.

Absolute bargain! I paid £50 for my new old stock turbografx. The reason I need a converter is so I can buy some pc engine games, they generally seem to be cheaper and easier to find than their turbografx counterparts. I NEED r type for turbografx, but the only american copies I have seen seem to be around the £100 mark whereas the pc engine version can be found for as little as £10!

The games have no region locking software, but the problem is that 6 or so of the pins on the HU card have a reversed layout.
But I have to agree that the smaller PC engine is much easier on the eye, but I rarely see them at a reasonable price.

I got lucky and got R-type I and R-type II in the same bundle.

The main reason I have wanted one for years is simple really. I just flat out love the look of the Hu-cards.

I dont collect as such but do have about 15-20 games, mine JAP though, some great titles, had some buddies around not so long ago, and one spent a good few hours on Strip Fighters 2, classic stuff :)

I love the original console, just soo small, I got the black one though (with a SCART mod), joypad though is terrible, and advice for a good replacement??

If you don't mind owning the bulkier turbografx and you live in the UK you can buy one from consolegoods with a region switch for £69 so you can play any standard HU card, or one with the rgb mod for the same price, I'm not sue if they sell a version with both mods.

I bought one in Jan from the same ebayer. I have bought Ordyne which is a pretty good shooter. Ninja spirit and vigilante. I agreed to buy a converter from someone on ebay for £30 so the seller relisted it for me at that price as a buy it now and someone bought it before i did - gutted.

Great to see this thread started :) I'm a huge fan, but slowly coming to terms with knowing I'll never own Magical Chase for the TG16.

So many hidden gems on the system, but the best part about collecting Turbo Grafx 16 games is the actual cartridge boards. They look fantastic in a stack.

In a bid to stop this thread from dying here is a picture of my turbografx with my small collection of games.
Has anyone on the forums got a large collection of turbografx or pc engine games? I am hoping to get my hands on one of turbo everdrives when it is released, it is probably the only way we will get to play magical chase on official hardware!
