Consoles you missed out on and always wanted to play

Postby UltraMagnus » Tue May 22, 2012 11:26 pm

PC ENGINE - For years I always wanted to play on a PC Engine but never got the chance. It was the games themselves that intrigued me, I always thought the Hucards looked awesome. I now have a SuperGrafx and love it. It has some brilliant games, but I have always been told by Pc Ebgine fans that it was on par with the Snes and Megadrive. Although I do love it, I dont think the machine quite hits the height of those machines.

PHILIPS CDI - mainly because of the Zelda and mario games. As a Huge fan of those series the idea of games on a non nintendo machine always piqued my interest. So dissapointed, the machine as a games machine is a complete and abject failure on all levels.

AMSTRAD GX4000 - I was a CPC 464 kid so the idea of an amstrad console always interested me. I finally got one with 21 games. A little dissapointed TBH as the games were just mostly straight conversions of the normal tape games, and some of the games ( Copter, wild streets, and no exit ) are just plain awfull. Although I do actually like the look of the machine and Pang, Navy Seals, Batman, and Switchblade are still great fun.

still yet to play on a C64GS, PCFX, PC engine CD, and atari jaguar CD.

What consoles did you want to play on at the time but have only recently had the chance to do so, and what did you think of them.

Never got to play on a mega cd as a kid... Found out my girlfriend had one hiding in the attic so gave it a good go... Was 50-50 on whether I enjoyed it. She has a fair few games but from what I could see what with stuff like road avenger - just simple QTE games but with better graphics. Sonic cd makes up for it, but from the years of never being able to afford one I was left a little disappointed. I know there's probably a fair few decent games but as it isn't my console I don't want to buy anything as then I've yet another console to buy for!

I guess in my retro collecting career I have covered a lot of the consoles/computers I didnt have as a kid, there are very few left now that I havent had/tried so I guess for me the ones would be:

Virtual Boy - to see what all the fuss is about
Sega CD - as it was the only Megadrive add on that I have never played
NES Rob - ditto the above
Vectrex - had one with Minestorm but that is all, had to sell it when hard up, never played any other game on it so this is probably the one that got away.

Always wanted an original Mega Drive as I only just missed out on it in '93 when my parents bought me a second gen one. Still have that though and being my first console, I'll probably never sell. But I'm thankful I managed to pick up the boxed original model one for a tenner not that long ago :) Plus of course if I get a Master System Converter, they're just a tad cheaper for the first MD when compared to the second model :P

Also Mega CD as I'd always wanted one though again, I prefer the drawer style and overall look of the original version. The lid design of the second model just doesn't look as cool I reckon  Still though, I like being able to play these games and a fair few I'd always wanted to play like Final Fight, Snatcher and so forth. Only have Sonic CD as part of the compilation on PS2 but would prefer an original copy for the proper soundtrack, which I think got changed for the later release(?)

The other systems I've bought in the past year or two, I've never been all that desperate to buy but they've always held an appeal for me. I like looking back at old tech and seeing how different companies approached the gaming market :)

Systems I'd like to source the now though...probably an FZ1 3DO and an Amiga 1200. Tempted to verge into pre-16-bit stuff but I never really played that as a kid bar a few goes on a Master System II when I had a Spectrum. Maybe someday when I have more space

Still hope to get my hands on a Sharp x68000 and/or an FM Towns Marty.

The Sharp's supposed to offer the best arcade conversions around and I'd love to experience this first hand some day. They always appear for huge amounts though, looking a bit battered and demanding a king's ransom for shipping. So far, I've done without.

The FM Towns Marty is something I've wanted to try ever since I was a kid and read a magazine article about Afterburner running on the standard FM Towns. I think I've missed the boat on this one now and they seem to go for a fortune when they appear. I'd also like to have a go on Tatsujin 2 - unfortunately, it wasn't released on anything else and I do love my Toaplan shooters.

I am going to be fulfilling a dream I had since I was a Kid and Finally own a NeoGeo with a copy of Burning Fight.

It should be arriving in the post soon, and although I have played on Emulators, I have never actually played on the AES. The AES has been on my wishlist ever since I was a Kid and cant wait to play on one first hand.

Dreamcast.
Always wanted one, always read about it in magazines, never got one (or seen one for that matter).

To be honest tough I didn't really know much about video gaming then. There was the Gameboy, the SNES and N64 and the Playstation. This was all taht existed in my eyes back then, I simply didn't know of all the other stuff.

Actually now that I got a Dreamcast and fulfilled that childhood dream, I find it kinda meh

There's been plenty of systems i've never played over the years, but there are 3 main ones that stick out that i have always wanted to get and they are:

Atari Lynx - I saw this in Child's Play 3 when i was a kid and have wanted one ever since
Virtual Boy - I heard bits and pieces about this when it was in development and then nothing for years but always wanted to see it for myself
Dreamcast - I never bought a Sega system since the Mega Drive but i've heard plenty of good things about this console

I hope to get all 3 of these at some point in the future and discover some games I might never have experienced

Virtua Boy - All the way. I know they are pretty awful, and the red and black gives people headaches but damn if it doesnt sound like fun.

The robot boxer one sounds particularly impressive, everything else sounds like shovelware

I'd like to play either the Mattel Intellivision or Atari 7800 .

The intellivision because there's something I find really appealing about how it looks. It makes me want to pick up the controller and start hitting buttons!! I have no clue what the games play like though.

Atari 7800. I know it gets panned a lot of the time, but from loving the 2600, I'd like to compare the progression in gaming (If any, I have no clue).

I always wanted to get hold of a PC Engine, mainly due to the tantalising coverage in certain sections of the gaming press at the time. Fate (or more accurately a lack of the required funds to purchase one from the numerous mail order advertisements in the magazines that were singing the machines praises) decided this was not meant to be.

Dreamcast. I still remember when we wanted to get a Dreamcast and our mom said "no". Then we managed to make a deal, if we manage to get half of the Dreamcast's price, our mom would pay the other half. After we finally got the money, the Dreamcast wasn't sold anywhere. It was kinda depressing back then... Of course, we have fixed the situation and we got a Dreamcast last year... Finally. xD

Sega Saturn for me. I'm thinking about finally getting one in a few months, but if I buy another console and start collecting for it I'll never get all the games on my current wishlist :S

@Pondis - I have a Virtual Boy and it really just serves as a novelty item. People see it on my shelf and try it out once, have a few laughs, and it goes back to collecting dust.

I think I'll be picking one up next week finally. The library is actually pretty damn good, even if the games are pricey.

Of the ones that I don't have yet:

Mega CD: Most of the games are naff, but there's something about that boot up screen that makes me want it.

Virtual Boy: I'm just curious as to how headache inducing they really are.

3DO: I did play around with them a little bit when I was in the US on holiday many years ago, but I'd like to be able to sit down and spend some quality time with one.

Vectrex: I was in love when I saw the screen.

The main one for me is the PC-FX. I've had several chances to pick one up for around £100, but have always left it behind due to their being so few English friendly titles around.

That said those few titles do peak my curiosity and I'd love to play them at some point. Chip Chan Kick especially for it being a single screen arcader similar to Bubble Bobble.

One day... one day!
