10 year old stepson wants a SNES for his birthday.

I look after my stepson every friday night when the missus goes out with the girls. I already got him into gaming via the xbox and wii, and his first games were new super mario bros and the sonic DS games. One friday I decided to get the megadrive and Snes out and let him play the originals and he loved them. He also loves Halo and modern games but I just think its great that a ten year old can still appreciate the older games.
I sort of expected him to think that they were a bit rubbish, but to my surprise, not only did he like them, but also wants a Snes with marioworld and mario allstars for his birthday. I know I could probably just get him them via Virtual console or get the mario anniversary collection, but I just think its worth encouraging his interest in older games.
He also loves playing side scrolling beat em ups with me in 2 player, and I have to admit to really enjoying replaying the games with someone playing them for the first time. Its just a great feeling that the classics are still finding new fans.

I love this post! It's great seeing a new generation getting into the stuff we grew up with. My brother is doing the same with his son - hes better at Turtles arcade on 360 than my brother now and hes only 3!

I know that feeling oh so well

I started with first nephew, first introducing him to the NES and then the N64, PS1. Now he has an Xbox original packed full of all the old classics from NES, MD, SNES etc... I recently also got my 4 yr old nephew into gaming aswell. So for his xmas present last year, I made him this:



Also, everytime I see him I give him one of my duplicate games. The only problem is, my bro can't get him off of it now as he's literally addicted to it

This is absolutley brilliant. It's great to see the younger generation appreciating the consoles we enjoyed as kids. I think i'm going to get my nephews around to see if it'll work on them

It just shows that classic game play surpasses any graphical/audio limitation. Proof is in the pudding as they say!

It's a great thing to pass on one's passions and history and it's no different with gaming.

BRILLIANT

this week I have been playing through Super Mario World (Super Famicom), with my 2 sons, the 7 year old was on the ipad searching youtube for the secret exits & my 4 year old was checking of the levels on a checklist I printed off so we can get all 96 goals done.
I let them go back through the game to collect the power ups & 1ups for me on donut plains
they have just as much enjoyment watching me play the game as they do playing it themselves.

yesterday I gave them a spare SFC & spare SMW cart I had & they put it in their bedroom, they love it,

Great stuff. Back when I was twelve (2002) I got into retro gaming, so my Dad took me out and bought me a SNES to put next to my brand new PS2

Only had a mega drive in the early 90s so it was proper exciting.
