Ah, the old 'judged on your size' chestnut...wait, we're still on a gaming forum aren't we? ;)

Anyway, I have to say that there's plenty of elitism around. Basically people who know a lot about a certain subject or have more games for X system than others tend to put points across rather rudely as if talking down to those they consider 'beneath' them. It's almost as if some people consider themselves 'Gods' of a certain subject and anybody who doesn't know as much or is just starting out gets talked to as if they are some sort of tragic slave...or something.

All everybody wants is for gamers and collectors to speak to each other on equal terms and not as if a bigger collection or wider knowledge automatically elevates them to a higher status.

Having said that, there are plenty of people on forums like this who have huge collections or lots of knowledge and are perfectly sound folk. In general, this is definitely one of the better forums and if I were more collector-minded then I'd stop by more often for sure.

As for Retro Gamer, it's my primary forum these days and I can see why people have pointed out certain issues but it's only a select few users who tend to needlessly escalate innocent debates into slanging matches so the rest of us just carry on regardless. Most will have different views on what is retro and what isn't but the resulting banter usually isn't insulting at all but quite jokey. There are some abrupt comments for certain but I just roll with it.

Anyway, if anybody thinks RG is bad then try Eurogamer forums (permitted swearing and nasty insults aplenty...well that's how it was a few years ago anyway, probably still the same) or blatantly elitist places like Neo Geo forums or certain schmup communities.

I can see a forum like Sealed Game Heaven would seem snobby , as they are quite protective of their obsession - but I enjoy the forum regardless of this - its still informative and interesting to see an extreme of collecting. Also helped give me a wake up call that if a game is sealed , I cant enjoy it. (not their words obviously)

So i tend to stick to here and Retro Gamer , avoiding getting involved in the pettiness helps. Just let them get on with it...

Sealed Game Heaven is incredibly snobby. They all relentlessly bully and intimidate anyone who doesnt collect what they want you to collect, or anyone who is new to the site. I came from there to here, as i got sick and tired of the sheer amount of egos & dramas on a daily basis.

Im glad i found this forum, as its full of calm, factual and interesting chats and discussions :D

Now that I think about it, I'm really glad this was the first site I came across when I began collecting because I dont think my wee sensitive soul could've handled all that kind of rubbish

I've developed so much as a retro gamer since I joined, and I don't think that would have happened if everyone here wasn't as kind and understanding as they are :)

I have to say that I have been an avid buyer or Retro Gamer since Load 29 and did join thier website some time ago. I did a few reviews for them and in the main, found people quite friendly.

However, no doubt many here buy this magazine and read the vitriol some spout in the letters, which must only be multiplied by a factor of idiot on the forums there. I have to say, that I never felt inclined to go on thier forums, always felt like a bit of an outsider.

I have been a member of many different forums and needless to say that this kind of thing happens in all forums - Football especially. The "I am a better fan than you" argument is a real time waster and pointless.

However this forum has been nothing but brilliant. I was a bit unsure at first as I know how some react to a Newbie but while I have not made any "friends" as such here yet, I can say that I can respect every single persons opinion that I have read and while I dont agree with all of them, I do feel I learn more about this hobby all the time.

Which is the mark of a great site- to inform and educate but to never talk down to - to share and for us to all enjoy the digital delights that retro gaming has to offer.

The thing i have found the best so far - is the whole "What is retro" argument does not matter here - which is great! I play both Modern and Retro - as todays modern is tomorrows retro, so the fact that this is so markedly different to other sites, is to its credit.

I have learnt more from RC, than any other site thus far and because of the complete lists provided, I learn all the time about games I did not know existed, but moreover that other collectors are ready to share and in some cases, part with games for reasonable prices, to other members.

I have had only great experiences with buying from members here, posting on forums and reading exciting, interesting threads from like minded people who care about this hobby.

Thanks to all and I hope to encounter you all on a thread soon!

I'll echo what others have said - this forum is a nice pleasent haven in what can sometimes be an....interesting experience on retro forums. I won't join a forum if it's full of people who are trying to claim superiority due to the size of their collection, it's just pointless!
It does happen the other way though, as well. There is a number of people who like to make it very clear that anyone who does have lots of games is somehow a lesser human being. Both sides are annoying, best to just leave places like that.

I will say though as a RG regular...it isn't that bad. Just ignore those who like to act as if they're the all knowing authority of gaming, the rest of us do ;)

I think the whole cliquey-thing and elitism is as much an aspect of humanity as opposed to any particular group of people, Shotblue, it wouldn't come as a surprise if you've come up against that sort of silliness somewhere along the line.

It certainly doesn't seem to be the case here, despite being very new I've already read a lot of helpful posts here and learnt a lot, it's a great site thanks to the database and enthusiastic gamers here on the forums.

Collecting is just acquiring and keeping things. Like anything that boils down to investing time and/or money, if someone has plenty of either they're going to find collecting easier. If someone wants to blow obscene amounts of cash on things just so they can play "my dog's better than your dog" with strangers on teh interwebs then it's a reflection on them rather than anybody else. They're video games, they're supposed to be fun.

Just want to crack open some of that sealed goodness and use the games though - see their little faces turn. Smash open those VGA boxes and let the game run free and be played.

People have different views on collecting. Some collect sealed games, some people cant stand it and just wanna crack the game open to play but the whole point is everyone should respect everyone elses views and opinions.

Anyway off to the market i go!

'Retro' or 'modern' at the end of the day aren't we just all "Gamers" and "Collectors".

I'd like to think so.

i've seen countless forums that seems to be full of these small-town super schmucks, who can boycott you if you don't post in the same lingo . other members seem to pick fights if one of the forum members dislikes a post you make, or they laugh around if are fixated on a certain series of games ( or whatever) or don't play by their social rules of conversation. Everything from rude remarks, unresponsiveness to snobiness, mild bullying and trolling. This also goes for atariage, nintendo age, and dozens of hobbyist, music, fan related forums.

That's why its important to have friends with same interest or use forums, usenet/bbs groups where you at least trust them over time or know 1-3 people in real life.

This seems to be a pretty neat forum.:)

I agree totally - just think its sad people have to act so superior. I collected sealed games for a while but now , i realise I want to play em more.

I'm going to be honest: when it comes to forums, you European folks are much MUCH friendlier. My fellow USA gamers are better in person, but seem to have issues with newcomers to forums. I appreciate all of you actually giving me the time of day, commenting on my articles, and friending me. :)

Once again, not saying all my fellow US gamers are like this, just a lot I've encountered.
