Death of AVGN or a new start for James Rolfe

Postby shotblue » Thu May 10, 2012 7:10 pm

We all know the about the movie. At worst its medicore at best its entertaining and worth the wait ( i don't think it will be that greatt in my opinion)

But i'm pretty sure there isn't any more room for that character after the movie. I think a year into the character something seemed flawed and that kept on growing until it reached its limit.

the nature of playing and geting used to 8-bit games after 15-20 years is painful and frustrating for all and i think that was gimmick in the first place. When all fans and internet gamers started to take retro gaming seriously the whole buzz of a large chunk of retro games seeming blatantly stupid and impossible became much less and people became more accustomed to the style of games. This also made his reviews less appealing over time.

What are your thoughts?

I think there is plenty more to do. Just look at how many other people review games on youtube.

Also the fact that he raised almost a million dollars in donations is testament to the fact that a lot of people are entertained and will be for a long time going forward.

Im not sure if i could handle about an hour of negativity. Youtube and the like is completely full of it and whilst it can be entertaining in bursts im just not sure if i could take too much of it.

however i do beleive he is talented to a degree and quite comedic at times, i just beleive his input could be put to better use in other regards.

i think he is entertaining, but i mostly love the videos he and Pat the NES Punk are in together, are looking forward to see how the movie will be, and i will not speculate if it will be good or not until i see it, also i'm looking forward to see how the movie that Johnny Millenium (Happy Console Gamer) is making will be, from the clips i have seen, it looks like Gamester81 is in it too :D

The fact that he raised nearly a million dollars in donations for his film is testament that people like what he is doing.

There was even an article mentioning him in Forbes a couple of weeks ago.

Had no idea he'd raised that much for the movie  Good on him though, quite a feat.

I've been a fan for a few years now and do really enjoy all of his vids not just the AVGN stuff. He's a talented guy as co-presenter/friend/etc Mike Matei. I do find AVGN a tad repetitive and some of the jokes a little off but that's the style and overall I still quite like it - was watching his Castlevania and Jaguar reviews last night in fact.

I prefer the majority of stuff TGWTG churns out though. I feel as reviewers, many of them have a more relaxed style and delivery though perhaps not as much technical prowess as James often brings.

Potentially (still) I'd like to do something review wise. Not as a career but to dabble and have fun with. If I can get near these guys in what I produce, I'll be more than happy :)

Hmm. Considering he did just briefly touch the fifth generation of consoles, not to mention the sixth, theres still so much material. I find it very refreshing when he reviews something other than a NES game for once, altough thats still is main focus.

I don't think its death. I think it'll be like with the Simpsons. Rumor had it that Groening wanted to stop making episodes after a movie, and yeah we all know what happened.

Why do I get the feeling the movie will be about E.T. on the Atari 2600? I think he's been building up to it, there were plenty of nods to it in his Spielberg episode.
Either that or a fight to the death with Irategamer. Although that might be difficult considering Chris Bores doesn't acknowledge James' existence!

Irate Gamer is lame anyways. Too similar to AVGN and tries too hard to be like him inho. Altough I don't know who actually came up first with the idea of this review format. And even if AVGN "copied" IG, its like with songs: Some covers are simply better than the original.

I'm looking forward to seeing the film. I'm a mega Nerd fan, in fact I bought his DVDs purely to see the Nerd room

I look forward to the film, and to future AVGN episodes! He has one of the largest followings, and his stuff is original. Just look at his Bugs Bunny Birthday Blowout video - amazing stuff!

Also check out his Batman videos, I think he's brought something extra to video game reviews/comedies.

Because it IS. At the end of the Spielberg Games video, it shows E.T and says that it will be continued in the upcoming movie. Unless it's changed of course but when you do videos about bad games, what else is worthy of being in the movie version?

As the subject, there's loads of crappy games still to be reviewed so he will keep going for a long time yet. You only have to read the comments on his website to see the countless people asking for more episodes to prove that. I always find his videos entertaining and while some of the ranting is purely comical, there are some games that really are crap. Stuff like Back to the Future clearly didn't follow the film in any way so what was the point?

That's why I want to see James fight him to the death, so he can vanquish the pretender!

I also want to see cameos from Mark (CGR), Steve and Larson (Machinima) and Taco-Man. A man can dream!
