Just a couple of things to bear in mind when recommending Master System games to an American:
The last US release was Sonic The Hedgehog in 1991.
The last European release was in 1996.

So that's FIVE YEARS (at least, don't forget all the Brazilian TecToy stuff) of games Miketendo would have to go to a lot of trouble to actually play - getting PAL stuff to work in an NTSC territory is more difficult than the other way round.

From what I've heard, the SMS is fairly compatible with PAL games. I am very interested in checking out some of the games you guys and gals got over in the UK since the market here was much smaller and less games were released.

having seen so many posts regarding Golden Axe, I'm amazed that nobody has mentioned the obvious:

Golden Axe Warrior

sure, it may look like a blatant Zelda rip-off, but I personally enjoy it hell of a lot more than Zelda
the main reason for that, however is most probably due to having played LoZ for way too long, whilst I didn't discover Golden Axe Warrior until about 2 years ago

it really is a great game and has all the qualities of an Action/Adventure that I demand from a game

also there's Astrowarrior, which is a nice SHMUP, without too much fanciness, but rather just fun, solid gameplay

color me nostalgic, but one of the first games I had for my SMS back in the days, and one I keep returning to is actually Enduro Racer - not nearly as "advanced" as Excite Bike for the NES, but still a nice "pick up and play" game

if you're looking for the definitive console/RPG experience, then look no further than Ultima IV for the SMS, the most true-to-original conversion out there

not only does it stay true to the original cRPG game, but it also features top-down view in dungeons, which may annoy some (contrary to the first-person view in the original), but it actually adds to the game, rather than the opposite

Safari Hunt will blow Duck Hunt out of the water any day! a much greater variety of creatures!

Same. I'm going to start by finding a boxed copy of Ninja Gaiden. We never got that game here in the States, so it'll be a treat to play it. From what I've read it seems compatible.

Only a small handful of the PAL games are 50Hz optimized. Xenon 2 and a few others.

The rest run fine in 60Hz :)

For double the fun, track down Ninja Gaiden on the Game Gear too. Surprisingly unlike many SMS/GG dual releases, they're actually two separate (and very good) games!

My all time favourite Master System game is Cosmic Spacehead. Part platformer, part point and click adventure, with turbo cute diminutive sprites. Given the trouble you might have playing it on your SMS in the US, you might want to play the Game Gear version instead. Don't play the MD version though, the redrawn graphics have lost all their charm.

Batman Returns is a very challenging platformer that often get's over looked. The 8 bit soundtrack is also very good.
