What are your personal killjoy moments in video games?

Postby cannonfodder64 » Sun Apr 22, 2012 12:48 am

After watching a top 10 list of the biggest personal killjoy moments, I decided to make a personal Top 16 list.

16.) Chibi-Robo! (GCN): Having to constantly charge even with tons of charge, which gets you paranoid.
15.) Order of the Phoenix (Wii): Having to sneak into Umbridge's office to recruit Ginny Weasley.
14.) Creature from the Krusty Krab (GCN): The final level, which is racing against a clock with a short amount of time.
13.) Super Mario Sunshine (GCN): Trying to drive those stingrays for the first time. Goodbye, three extra lives!
12.) Battle for Volcano Island (GCN): Those army crabs. They test my patience!
11.) Madagascar (GCN): I hate this game because I got shot on the first level.
10.) Pokemon Snap (N64): When your size is not very good, Prof. Oak doesn't bother to continue scoring your picture.
9.) Robots (GCN): Trying to control your pod. It goes too fast, and the controls are horrible.
8.) Super Mario 64 (N64): Who knew that the hardest thing to do in SM64 was building a snowman. BUILDING A SNOWMAN!
7.) Hunger Games (Newgrounds): It's all a joke?!
6.) Pokemon Red (GB): Losing to a Pokemon that has a type vulnerable to your Pokemon's type.
5.) Pilotwings 64 (N64): I can't land that stupid plane.
4.) Sonic Riders (GCN): In Story Mode, I've lost on the Jungle Track about 50 times.
3.) Super Monkey Ball 2 (GCN): That Spinning Wheel in the Underwater World. Die, die die, die, DIE! Can't I catch a break?
2.) Animal Crossing (GCN): I like Mr. Resetti, but when I need to give him a typed apology, even when it's perfect, he says I failed!
1.) The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker (GCN): I've only played the game once, because those stupid Moblins caught me and threw me in jail. And just when I started playing the first dungeon! What a joke.

So, what are your personal killjoy moments in video games? What's your opinion of my list?

- Impossible time limits on Simpsons: Hit & Run. Altough I did 100% that game it took me HOURS just for the last mission. A race against the clock with a limit so tight, one little bump, one little shortcut driven at a false angle, and you're done. Its litterally: You have to drive the shortest route possible in the shortest time possible. Not possible for you to do, PHYSICALLY possible. Also a lot more tight time limits with little to no room for error, but the last mission was just balls hard. I got to hand it to the game tough, it didn't get frustrating, just "I'm so close I'm gonna win THIS time, I mean I've only tried 24 times now".

- Seven lap races in Need for Speed Underground. Lead 6 1/2 laps, bump a pixel when you see the finish line, get last place. If you do implement rubber banding, do it right at least.

- Move object A to place B, while constantly under attack, and object A keeps sliding backwards. God of War I'm looking at you. That elevator you had to spiral downwards while being constantly attacked by skeletons, ARGH. Why are they doing that its not fun just frustrating.

- UN. SKIPPABLE. CUT. SCENES. (And checkpoints right before an unskippable cutscene).

- Escort missions. Especially with suicidal people to protect.

- Not being able to configure the camera X and Y axis. I really wanted to get into Red Ninja: End of Honor (and that has absolutely nothing to do with the main characters physique). The broken ass camera and not being able to configure it killed it for me. Not even the gals...uhm...personality? could make up for that.

Easy, it's the one that still haunts me!

I got Shenmue in Dececember 1999 & spent the 2 two weeks over Christmas trying to finish it, at the start of the game your girlfriend is kidnapped or something along those lines, & I spent ages trying to get the funds for a ticket to china,

When you get the ticket, it gets stolen. ARRRRGH! hours spent working on the fork lift at the factory!!!!!!!!!
Then, I finally got the ticket, & got on the ship to China & then................... The game just ends!

I completed the game at 6pm on millennium eve, I will never forget the disappointment of not saving the girl or getting revenge.
& then I went out & got very, very drunk. Lol

I never got round to playing Shenmue 2, so theres still some unfinished business.

spot on with the 'having to go to work' even though you play games because you are not at work! I know Shenmue tried to do a degree of realism but the schlepping boxes at the docks was simply plain dull.

A recent one for me as I set up the NES for an afternoon of retro the other day. Robocop - going down stairs. Very simple, incredibly frustrating. Also any game of yester year that is balls hard but you only ever get one life.
