Bit of a late reply, but Battle Royale was one of this first Asian films i watched. It was on at 1am and i stayed up until 3-4am watching it on a school night and went ahead and ordered to double box set the next day. Absolutely Fantastic movies, and the Manga is even better, so many little sub plots and character details in the manga.

Been watching some more SK films the last few weeks. Firstly, The Chaser, again a bit grim but i personally think it's an great film.

Then on the same kind of story line but with fantastic action, The man from Nowhere. Good story line and good martial arts scene, it really keeps you glued to the tv!

Lastly Musa (The Warrior), set in the 1300's across Korea and China, the story can be a little bit slow at times but a very good film overall with very nice fighting scenes and character devlopment/

Overall i think i like Asian films because they don't mind having very very grim ending you will not see in western films. I think a good example what was supposed to be the proper ending for I Am Legend. Yes, Will Smiths character survives in this ending but it also shows the truthful dark side of his character. He is the monster in the "night" snatching people up from the new civilization, he himself has lost his humanity and the era of humans is over.

Watched Max Payne on the telly last weekend. The most surprising part was that it wasn't that bad - actually quite entertaining.

Slightly over the top but this is to be expected from a Video Game based movie.

The effects were decent enough and ol' Marky Mark puts in an adequate performance. To be honest a lot of Video Game movies are destroyed not only cos their crud, but also because the acting is terrible.

a fairly respectable 6/10.

Just sat and watched Chronicle I’m impressed by several aspects of the film, and the ability to create and maintain a good story from start to finish .

Watched three movies in a row:

The Dead Pool (1988) 5/10
The Shining (1980) 7/10
Falling Down (1993) 7/10

Currently trying to watch all the interesting Jack Nicholson movies. Saw One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and The Passenger recently and they were both good. I think I'll check out The Last Detail (by Hal Ashby, who also made the absolutely fantastic Being There) and Chinatown next. Anyone have any other Nicholson recommendations, I'd appreciate it! ;)

Watch Battle Royale, and then go the theater to watch "The Hunger Games" because the plot is somewhat similar!

Hunger games was mostly a teen film, we were the oldest by 10 years easily in there :P But I was surprised, was pretty decent.

Off the top of my head

Five Easy Piece's even though the audio on the DVD release is terrible to put it lightly. Easy Rider, Batman, Red's, Carnal Knowledge, The Postman Always Rings Twice, The Terror (just for the sake of curiosity) The Passenger, The King of Marvin Gardens, Blood and Wine, About Schmidt, Prizzi's Honor, The Border, The Witches of Eastwick, Hoffa

I would recommend Ironweed and Goin South. But there both OOP and are pricey to get hold of in terms of DvD values (especially Goin South)

Hope this keeps you busy ;)

Wow, a big thank you to both of you!

I've seen The Departed now too, wasn't particularly impressed with that one, it felt like one long music montage. I wouldn't call it bad though!

I actually recently gave away my copy of Ironweed, because it was pan and scanned.

Again, thanks. :D

Just finished watching Drive Angry there, have to say it pretty much defined what I look for in an enjoyable film that doesn't tax the grey matter all that much

Bought Hugo on Bluray the other day and watched it on the weekend.

Lovely visuals but felt a bit too slow and it took too long for the story to unravel. I could imagine it being a bit of a spectacle in 3d, but in 2d, I was a tad underwhelmed.

A bit of a let down as well since it scores well on rottentomatoes.

6/10

On the other hand, I watched Lethal Weapon 2 and Demolition Man back to back on the telly last night. A couple of pieces of pure 90s gold! 8/10 for each of them!

I think we all understand the level here.... :D

I felt the same way about hugo, a bit slow and would have been nice to see some more original film footage. Also the Lethal Weapons was my favorite films as a youngster, some of the first VHS tapes i bought myself when i was 11 or 12 :D.

watched Prometheus yesterday. Lot's of parts left me still puzzled. Not sure It was worth the £12 to see it (posh seats).

Just finished watching Scott Pilgrim. Been meaning to watch this for a while but only just got round to putting it on. Absolutely hilarious and unsurprisingly, I loved the many videogame parallels and references.

8/10.

Witness (1985) [dir. Peter Weir]

At first I thought this would be a fairly standard corrupt cop story, but was surprised when the story switched focus to Harrison Ford's character getting integrated with the amish. Funny and pretty exciting with a good cast, although sometimes a bit cheesy. 7/10

Now I have to see Weir's Picnic at Hanging Rock sometime, reading about it always reminds me of Nicolas Roeg's Walkabout, which is a movie I really like.

Mission Impossible Ghost Protocol. Found it a bit far fetched, especially the sequences in the sand storm, but I guess that's what Mission Impossibles are all about. Follows the well tried and tested formula of 'blocks' of action scenario sequences.
Still enoyable though as a mindless bit of entertainment.
