Argos sold Genesis games in the 90's

Postby Happyguy1984 » Sat Mar 24, 2012 9:00 pm

I went to Argos in the mid 90's to get Mortal Kombat 2 and Batman forever and the staff brought up Genesis versions. I said they would not work on UK Megadrive as they were the US versions and they said that was all the stock they were sent and they had never had any of the Megadrive versions in to sell. Both games worked and I still have them.

1) Does anyone know why Argos sold Genesis versions of these games? both are from Acclaim, coincidence?
2) Does anyone remember seeing or buying Genesis versions of games in any UK stores during the 90's?
3) As these are the Genesis versions and not the Megadrive versions of the games, do they not count in being added to my Retro Collect collection checklist?

I don't remember them selling genesis versions mate but i do remember them selling megadrive games in general when i was in school ( back in 2005 ) i did fabric tec and there were old catalogues and magazines which we used for paste colages which funnily enough sold megadrive bundles for £35 brand new :)

I also remember them selling Sonic and Knuckles fairly cheap same with the zeldas on gameboy colour who would have known games like these sealed would be worth a few quid in the future ;)

2005? I didn't know they were still selling them that late! I would have snagged myself another Megadrive for a spare as it is my most used console. Someone told me Poundstretchers were selling boxed Game Gear games 3-4 years ago, I wish I knew about it then. I have never seen any games in there since except for a Sonic Underground LCD game which I bought.

One of the more controversial UK retail releases for the Mega Drive is ISHIDO: THE WAY OF STONES. Although the game came in cardboard packaging and clearly says Genesis on the box, it was absolutely on sale at high street retailers here in the UK. I don't mean independent stores, I mean the likes of VIRGIN Megastore stocked it. When I was trying to get all of the official PAL Mega Drive games some years ago now, many of the Mega Drive "complete" lists that were on the net at the time had ISHIDO Listed as a game that saw a PAL release.

I personally don't count it as a game that you need to have to own a complete PAL set as the game does not say Mega Drive anywhere on the packaging or cartridge - but I can clearly remember seeing it for sale here in the UK (I bought one!!!). I wouldn't be suprised to learn that stores such as Argos stocked Genesis carts. It is not uncommon for the PAL version of FANTASIA to contain the Genesis branded cart, this was a game that was in short supply and was only released for a limited time in conjunction with the release of the movie on VHS..........and we all know about Thunderforce III.

I sold & bought GENESIS titles as PAL versions in the early years as they were fairly common in retail outlets, also at the time most the market was not as locked down as it today! The only stumbling block was language hence you would get GENESIS games frequently in the UK & Europe.

Back in the mid-nineties I bought Ms Pac-Man and a Lion King from a Pound-Stretcher outlet (I think...). The Ms Pac Man was Mega Drive, but the Lion King was Genesis packaging. I still own both these games and the genesis packaging definitely confused me back in the day before I knew what it was. One thing that stands out (that I now know) was that the Lion King ROM works equally on all consoles. Perhaps Sega distributed similar ROMs in the UK to get rid of excess stock?

Anyway, this is a topic I've been interested in for a few years now, interested enough to make my first post, hello Retrocollect.com! :)

There are only a handful of Genesis games which are actually locked out and need a region mod to play. A lot of them are Konami games, and they're generally later games.

Also, some games like Bare Knuckle/Streets of Rage and Super Shinobi/Revenge of Shinobi give different title screens depending on the region, but the ROM is apparantly the same across all releases.

^ Those tiny AtGames MDs that actually take carts (I've got one - it's crap) don't seem to have a proper region switch.
All my MD games are DEFINITELY PAL, and yet when I put them in the AtGames a few will show US title screens.
Virtua Fighter 2 is a good example - on the AtGames, the "Mega Drive" under the VF2 logo at the main screen changes to "Genesis".

Ms Pac-Man has different copyright information.

I remember the 99p Store had sealed Game Gear games (US versions) of The Lion King, The Jungle Book, Mrs Pac-Man & Sonic the Hedgehog 2. That was about 5 years ago now I think in Northampton, I remember buying them at that price.

I remember Argos selling the consoles in 2000/2001 when the Dreamcast was discontinued, funnily enough! It was the
Megadrive II with Mega 6 Vol.3 pack-in I think it was £49.99 initially
there were a handful of games too

Toy Story
Sonic & Knuckles
Disney Classic Collection
Sonic Compilation
Classic Collection

I don't think they were old stock either, the games either had slightly darker boxes (Sonic & Knuckles) or the carts were assembled in the Phillippines rather than Japan/UK

The Megadrive consoles were NOS though, I had one of those suckers open and the main board had a printed date of 24th Aug 1996.

I hope this belated response helps :)
