Favourite Game Based Film?

Postby Tinkle Popo » Sat Feb 25, 2012 4:09 pm

I just finished watching the cheese-fest that is Ballistic: Ecks Vs Sever. The only reason I own it is because it's the only film I know of that is directly inspired by a Gameboy game. That in itself gives it kudos, IMHO.

Anyway, it got me thinking about all the terrible game based films out there. Some are totally unwatchable but some are pretty cool guilty pleasures. I really like HOTD 2 (and not just for Nadine Valazquez ;P), the Street Fighter animated film, Doom (I know, I know!), Hitman and Silent Hill amongst others. However, my favourite is Mortal Kombat. I love that film! It captures the game and it's universe so well with great fighting and effects without ever taking itself too seriously (I'm looking at you Street Fighter: The Movie!).

So, which ones do you like, if any!?

Maybe if there's enough response we could collate an exhaustive list for collecting purposes? :)

Haven't watched too many video game based films (for good reason I suppose ) but I have watched the Tomb Raider films *Obviously*. I liked the first one. The second one... Not so much. Not exactly keen on Angelina Jolie playing Lara to start off with either.

I rather like the Resident Evil films even if they are a bit on the mediocre side - I just love zombie flicks and well hey, Milla Jovovich is quite easy on the eyes ;) Doom also surprised me, had a similar atmosphere but from all the properly average reviews I'd read I was expecting a lot worse. It's no Citizen Kane though

The animated Street Fighter movie, I watched on my copy of Hyper Street Fighter II on the PS2 so was probably edited at numerous points. But I rather enjoyed it, certainly looks a lot better than the animated Tekken film :D

I can't emphasis how much I hated the Street Fighter movie with JCVD though. Yes, it almost falls into the "so bad it's good" category but I think it's a terrible last film for the great Raul Julia to have been in. From memory the only reason he did it is because his kids persuaded him

As for the MK films, well, the first one had The Highlander in it...the second one had Dexter's Dad in the same role...kind of says it all for me

Hitman was a very good film. If they hadn't had a few changes of heart in post production the finished product would have been much better and closer to the source material.

I have a soft spot for Resident Evil (so bad its good). I've not seen most of the others mentioned in this thread, and I'm not that bothered. ;)

I thought Hitman was a decent film too....mainly due to the occasional game inspired camera angle....

Same with doom too I guess

Honestly, I don't have any. I haven't watched many video game-based films. In fact, I don't think I've seen any... I want to see The Wizard really bad, though.

I like Dead Or Alive for obvious reasons ;) . TBh, I quite like most VG inspired films, I could sit and watch any of the Mortal Kombat's, Tomb Raiders or resi's quite happily all day long :). I did watch a real turd of a film though the other week - Bloodrayne 2 - give it a miss!

Resident Evil, but only the first. Even both my parents liked it.

And Tekken, the real life film. A lot of people bash it, and its true some key characters aren't in there or get killed off real quick (why Eddy why) but all in all a decent movie with some cool fighting.

Love Street Fighter the Movie as a kid. And Mortal Kombat.

Silent Hill is a mess of a movie, I've watched it a few times, also with my gf and her mom and I had to explain so much to them (why the radio cracks, whos Pyramid Head, whats with the Nurses etc), that it occured to me you must absolutely know about the games to get a grip on the movie.

On a sidenote, The Gamer isn't too bad either ;)

Resident evil maybe, although never particularly good, just good popcorn movies :P Other than that maybe "Hitman" that was cool.

My favorite game based film has to be the first Mortal Kombat. Others I like were the first two resident evil films, silent hill, doom and street fighter the movie with raul julia but only because it falls under the "so bad it's good" category. Street fighter the animated movie is my favorite anime based on a game.

I did too, saw it in the Cinema, owned it on VHS upgraded it to a DVD

Honestly is not THAT bad just not what people expected, it's just like Blade Runner for kids with Dinosaurs.

Plus the Soundtrack is pretty decent too.

I liked the Resident Evil films as well and Silent Hill! There is another one of each being released, looking forward to them!
Doom was a pretty rubbish film, apart from the FPS sequence, I thought that bit was pretty cool!

Pokemon: The First Movie.

Because Mewtwo is so evil. And has awesome dialogue.

Street Fighter 2 :Animated - still enjoy it now. The pacing and great fight sequences put it way above the awful live action film.

Vaguely remember enjoying Silent Hill and enjoyed the first 3 Resi Evil films - they are real no brainers but my guilty pleasures nonetheless.

Wouldnt mind watching The Wizard and Super Mario again,no matter how crappy they are.

As for Tomb Raider - I have no interest in the games or films - just on of those 'not bothered' moments.
