What Retro Games Have You Completed Recently?

Postby Cauterize » Sun Jan 15, 2012 5:06 pm

Similar to the thread over in the Modern Gaming subforum, let's get going with listing the retro games we've completed!

I'll start with a huge personal achievement:

Image

All 151 Pokemon caught legitimately :) Took long enough and was something I should have done years ago given I had the American release imported as soon as it came out. Good times, Generation II Pokemon Gold next!

Very impressive!

I just finished Doom on GBA. Mad last level in difficulty, but quite disappointing ending structure. Oh well, it was fun while it lasted.

Nice one Adam, I caught em all back in the day, had to trade with kids and all sorts but got there in the end

I haven't completed a right lot recently apart from an SMS game or two, you'll have to wait for the episodes of The SMS Quest to see which ones though ;)

We're trying to finish as many SNES games as we can on a Dutch forum I'm on, so I just finished Legend and Boogerman for the Super Nintendo!

Well done, Cauterize! But how did you get Mew? ;)

Splatterhouse 2 (Mega Drive) - I've been playing the arcade Splatterhouse a lot (a lot) lately, so after clearing it on one credit I figured I'd go back to the sequel, which I beat a few years and never played again. I remember why I never went back to it now! The arcade game is pretty tough, but it never feels unfair- the enemies are usually only a touch faster than Rick, have poor reach, and take one, maybe two hits to kill. The challenge mostly comes from learning how Rick moves, and the best way to tackle each section of the house with minimal damage..

The most common enemy in Splatterhouse 2, on the other hand- the Screaming Mimi- takes two to three hits before hitting the deck, moves around at a terrifying pace, and has twice the reach of poor Rick. Many of the other enemies are either very small (and hard to hit) or lightning fast, and the bosses are amazingly, agonizingly cheap (like the giant face that launches fast-moving ghouls, the Rick clone that just won't die, and the horrible final boss that floods the screen with enemies and eventually turns into a bat that's five times as fast as you and, if you don't hit it, will go back to a previous form and make you lose progress). It doesn't help that there's a lot of long, dull sections (like the library room with nothing but crawling hands) and cheap hits (the fish in the river stage). It rarely feels like a fair fight, unlike the original game, so it's far more frustrating.

Such a hateful, spiteful little game! But I made it to the end, somehow.

Just finished ffx about an hour ago.

Before xmas i read an article on the vita remake and i decided to give it a few hours. I've spent months fighting juggernauts, evil eyes, tankets at the monster arena to get spheres to level up.

Set myself a challenge to kill all the dark aeons and to get to pennance.

I managed to kill all the ones before yojimbo and admittedly, zanmato'd bahamut and Anima but keep getting wasted by dark yojimbo.

Problem is, he appears three times so i cant even keep zamatoing him.

Anyways, got bored and decided to finish the story off.

Two months well spent methinks!!

Just playing Pokemon Ruby at the moment but I can't see me getting all the Pokemon on that!

I think the short and sweet Metroid Zero Mission was the last game I completed. Absolute beauty of a game.

Also finished Yoshi's Island on the GBA. I'll probably be chipping away at unlocking the 2nd secret levels now.

Make that two of us, however I'm aiming to catch them all on there too!

There is a glitch in game (No, not that truck) which actually allows the capture of Mew without any cheat devices. Well, many methods to tell the truth, have a read here as it's really interesting - http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Mew_glitch

I finished Super Castlevania 4 the other day. A huge accomplishment considering I tried many years ago and failed on more then one occasion. I forgot all the ridiculous instant kills as well.

Just finished playing Final Fantasy 2. Started it 8 days ago, and completed it in 23hrs and 53mins! I fairly enjoyed it, more so than FF1 methinks. Certainly was a lot easier to figure out where to go anyway!

The last Retro game i beat was G-Police for the PS1 :D a realy unknown underated gem that not many people talk about which is a shame as its a great 3D Shooter :)

For modern games it has to be Resident Evil Revelations a fab game that took me nearly going on 10 hours off playtime to complete so definatly not a short game in my books :D

Cool, great game, one of the best MD platformers I reckon :)

I last finished Chuck Rock on SMS, not the best game I've played lately but far from the worst. Definitely worth a play through anyway as it's a solid little platformer. Gameplay here :)

I recently finished Golden Axe (again!!!!) and Streets of Rage 2.
