Megadrive Collectors Unite

Postby GMass » Sat Sep 24, 2011 12:28 pm

Having finished my Dreamcast collecting I'm now chosen (or it chose me...) to collect for the Sega Megadrive. However I'm going to pace myself and take my time while trying now to spend too much and also help populate the artwork etc in the Retrocollect database.

So are there any more MD collectors about?

Most definately. I'm now after special editions for the Mega Drive (such as Ecco the Dolphin) as I completed the full PAL set back in 2005. The games you got the other day GMass were excellent and you've got a few of the harder games to get out of the way already :D

I was gonna start this thread last week, but I got sidetracked as usual. I love the Mega Drive, but for the life of me I don't know why! Technically, I'd say the SNES was better than the MD, but put both consoles in front of me and I'll pick the MD every time. It's not a nostalgia thing either as my big brother had a SNES that I used all the time, there's just something about the arcade style gameplay of the MD games that drags me in. And I prefer the pad layout too :). I keep meaning to add a load more scans to the site but I've just had no spare time lately, I would love to see the database finished though.

As already mentioned by GSH, you're off to a cracking start with that bundle you purchased! Some of the hardest to find games in that lot you spawny get   . Personally I don't think the MD set is that hard, there are a couple of rare variations but if you just want one of each game there isn't anything that's particularly rare - although the odd game will probably be pricey (Pirates of Darkwater, Punisher, Death And Return Of Superman, Mega Man) and then there's the Aus exclusives which tend to sell for over £100 each nowadays for the non sports games :).

Anyway, I picked up some real nice MD items the other day, they should be working there way to me as we speak so I'll post pics in here when they arrive :).

Just been playing Aladdin - it's very different from the SNES version. I don't recall Aladdin having a sword and killing city guards for a start. Either way it's a great little game and I look forward to giving another go later tonight.

I also tried out Megaman, mainly to see if the save still works. Trouble is I can't finish a level...the bosses just totally murdered me. Rock Hard!

I'm going to see how much of a collection I can built up by spending only a couple of quid a game and with some trading.

I was going for a full set but have decided to drop that since I'm getting into SNES more and more.I really love both 16 bits systems, but since SNES is rising in price at a huge rate, I believe it's better to focus on that before more games become unobtainable.

I have around 200 MegaDrive games though, some variations.

I also have Pirates of Dark Water, for as SNES as well, whole different game! What would it be worth today?

What is you want to know about the Dutch Spirou?
Obviously, the character is called Robbedoes over here and it's not real hard to find it within the Netherlands.

I am trying to visualise a completed MD collection but simply cannot but i bet it is an awsome sight :o ,there were a lot of good games made for that system and i think you are going to have an interesting time finding some of the more obscure stuff like Decap Attack,Skeleton Krew or the pinball games.

You can find That version of Spirou quite cheap in Italy, guessing he was called that there too?.

I'm having a bit of a collecting dilemma at the minute, I can sense the end of my PAL MD set coming and I'm not sure where I want to go after that. I'm thinking an NTSC-J MD set or maybe a Genesis set :). I could move onto another console but I'm just not as enthusiastic about any of the others. Problem is, the nearer I get to finishing my set the slower I seem to buy the games, not because of availability or money, but because I don't think I actually want to ever finish collecting for the MD

My wife would tell you that you are not alone!

I've pondered over the Genesis collection, but can't see myself doing that any time soon due to space and storage (as in combined weight in my loft) issues

I'd say go for the exclusives from Japan/US then maybe complete sets for all of them XD

I think I have a couple MD Australian cover variations, will have to check though.

I love the Mega Drive. It's been my favourite console for a while now and the one I always end up buying more stuff for. As I've said elsewhere on the forums, I collect for the joy of playing the games, not so much to have a full collection. That being said, I can never have enough MD titles. :D

The MD really is one of those "I only buy what I see cheap on fleas" systems for me as I used to collect a lot of SNES and there's alot of crossover titles. Having said that, I've recently been lucky with MD finds (well, lucky for Germany, in the UK that'd probably be mediocre deals) so I'm closing some gaps here and there. Still, I only have slightly over 50 games for it so it's not going anywhere really ;)

I think most of the best games have been mentioned already, apart from Alien Soldier, that's ace :). Streets of Rage 2 is my all time fav game, I play it all the time even though I've hammered it to death and can finish it with my eyes closed pretty much :). But for me the best thing about the MD has to be the awesome SHMUP's on the system. I still need quite a few of the NTSC-J ones that never made it to PAL land :).

I have to give a special mention to Alien 3 too, love that game to pieces and even though I can now finish it on Hard without taking a hit I can still pick it up and enjoy playing through it :).

50 games isn't bad to say you don't actively collect for the system! When my new games arrive this week I'll reach the 650 game milestone, and I'll still be 71 games off of a full PAL set! Loads of variations in my set ;) .

I admire people who have the drive to collect all games for a system. I find it really hard to justify spending money on games I know I wouldn't play, such as Rise of the Robots and Chakan (or whatever). More power to you, hydr0x. ;)

Having said that though, two of my MD games, Daffy Duck in Hollywood and Spot Goes to Hollywood, are listed are 'rare' in the DB. I'm rather chuffed about that. :D

I'll have to be prehaps a little "safe" on my choices here, but I really like the earlier releases on the MD, brings back memories of my elder brother bringing them home and sometimes letting me have a go :D

So would be Revenge Of Shinobi (with it's superb in game music I may add!), Golden Axe, and a corking version of Mercs as well!!
