Best Opening Video / Cinematic?

Postby Joe Boy 1986 » Sun Sep 08, 2019 1:59 pm

With the recent re-release of my favourite final fantasy, VIII; I marvelled at how much I love the opening cinematic.
Opening cinematic's, for the most part, set the tone for game, giving information about game and what you're about to dive into.

What are yours?

This is one of my faves, the opening to Bioshock - also if anyone has played Infinite's DLC content...... ! :o

ooooph, the bio shock opening is delicious. The Andrew Ryan monologue and seeing the city scape open up was unreal the first time around.

Soul Blade has to be a strong contender for the greatest intro of all time.

As far as telling a story, Soul Reaver had it all on the PS1. The graphics still hold up surprisingly well.

Oh the way it ties in with the original. YAS. very good. The lore of the original Bioshock is excellent. Have you read the book, Rapture? It's a mix of detailed diaries of the people that build it and its fall into chaos. very good

First intro that immediately comes to mind is the Banjo-Kazooie opening. Such a jolly, fun intro, and with a catchy tune, too.

Diddy Kong Racing springs to mind for me for pretty much the same reason.

Yep, my first thought was Soul Blade, then I thought "no, it'll not be as good as I remember". Quick visit to youtube and there it was in all it's bonkers glory. I confess, I watched it three times again :)

I like the vast majority of Star Wars games that begin with the opening crawl. I think the first one that blew me away (musically that is) was Shadows of the Empire on N64. It sounded identical to the cinema soundtrack. Previously I'd played the Super Star Wars games on SNES - which sounded OK - and the NES one

Still get a little tingle just when the pause between "A long time ago in a galaxy far away...." followed by the first chord of the main theme.

The World Cup 98 intro was a thing of beauty and they picked the most late-90s song they could have found for the sequence.

Shadow of the Beast 2 on the Amiga.
Game was so-so but the intro was the Amiga showing of it's capabilities.
Also The Settlers, again on the Amiga.
Unlike Shadow of the Beast 2, the Settlers was great.
