My go-to beer is pretty much always Staropramen.

However if I want to spend a little more and have my tastebuds go into orgasm-mode then any beer from Brewdog is **** awesome. Even their Alcohol-free beer is good for lunch.

I'm a recent Franziskaner convert. I'm also really keen on trying Schneider-Weiss but I can't find any UK stockists!

Right, seeing as there are a fair few beer drinkers here, I thought that as I am in the trade, I would share with you my journey tasting different beers from around the UK and further afield. This is not so much as pairing beers and retro games, but seeing as we all should be old enough to enjoy those longer loading times with something refreshing (for those 8-bit gamers out there - Speccy, C64 and Amstrad, you know what I am talking about!) - so without further ado, here is my first review and it is gaming related:

Hadouken Amplified IPA

Image

Image

Beer: Hadouken
Brewery: Tiny Rebel Brewery
Brewery Location: Newport, Wales
Presentation: 330ml Bottle
Alcohol Level: 7.4%
Style: IPA (India Pale Ale)
Price: £2.99
Bought From: Wholefoods Market
Tasting Date: 08/10/15

Appearance:
Colour: Amber
Clarity: Brilliant
Head: Fair – lasted a while before settling to a nice collar around the top of the beer.

Aroma:
Intensity: Pronounced (Strong)
Balance: Medium – heading towards sharp
Flavour: barley, yeast, malt, some citrus notes
Other Observations: spicy and earthy
Flavour:
Intensity: Pronounced (Strong)
Balance: Towards the bitter end of the spectrum, some fruit, but the yeast and hop notes shine through.
Flavours: Lemon, lime, citrus, yeast, barley, hops
Mouthfeel:
Body: Full
Carbonation: Medium – not a gassy beer but has good balance of carbonation with the strength of the alcohol.
Sensation: This has a creamy, drying feel to the beer, with some fruit but the hops and the yeast are to the fore here.

Finish:
Intensity: Medium+
Length: Medium+
Balance: Bitter and dry, but very flavourful.

Overall
Craftmanship: Very Good
Freshness: Fresh
Personal Taste: This is a very strong but well made IPA. I am not sure about the “Amplified” note on the bottle as this does have a strong and big intensity (not unlike the Hadouken punch from Streetfighter 2 – which the beer is named after) and is a very muscular ale. Super yeasty and malty with some hop notes running through it. Some fruit flavours too, but this is all about the muscle!

Game Pairing: Streetfighter 2 - SNES - simply what else could you play with this?

Currently Playing (May 2019):

PS2 : The Great Escape

Next - up, one from our Belgian friends:

Rodenbach Rosso

Image

Beer: Rosso Red Fruit Beer
Brewery: Rodenbach (Palm)
Brewery Location: Roselaere, Belgium
Presentation: Bottle
Alcohol Level: 4.0%
Style: Fruit beer
Price : £2.49
Bought From: Wholefoods Market
Tasting Date: 04/10/15

Appearance:
Colour : Dark ruby red
Clarity: Brilliant with a little dense cloudiness to it
Head: Light

Aroma:
Intensity: Medium -
Balance: Medium
Flavour: Raspberries, strawberries, cherries and cranberries. Also, some smoky and spicy notes from the oak aging
Other Observations: As above
Flavour:
Intensity: Medium
Balance: Medium with the sourness of the cherry and raspberry, tempered by the oak notes and some residual sweetness.
Flavours: Toast (Oak), Raspberry, Cherries and cranberry
Mouthfeel:
Body: Medium
Carbonation: Fair – not gassy at all.
Sensation: has a good mouthcoating fruity feel to this beer. Not astringent nor bitter, but there is a sourness there, which has a smooth finish to it.

Finish:
Intensity: medium
Length: medium
Balance: Medium – slightly sour on first taste but has a good balance of sweetness too on the end palate.

Overall
Craftmanship: Good
Freshness: Slightly past its best (BBE was June 2015)
Personal Taste: A good fruit beer, for those that like a more serious style from Belgium. More body than Fruili but just as enjoyable. Again, as this was after the BBE, could have been slightly fresher and this might have impacted the amount on the head of the beer, but this still tasted really good. Lighter in alcohol so very easy to drink.

Game Pairing: Super Mario Kart - SNES - a great party game and this light fruity beer is an ideal for a non-heavy alcohol get together.

Time for something from Germany (One for the mighty Hydrox, master of site updates!)

Sunday Easy IPA

Image

Beer: Sunday
Brewery: (Brewers) and Union
Brewery Location: Munich, Bavaria, Germany
Presentation: 500ml Bottle
Alcohol Level: 5.5%
Style: IPA (Easy)
Price: £3.29
Bought From: Wholefoods Market
Tasting Date: 05/10/15

Appearance:
Colour: A light amber colour
Clarity: Brilliant, with a slight cloudiness to it.
Head: Good

Aroma:
Intensity: Medium (-)
Balance: Medium, neither sweet nor sharp.
Flavour: Barley notes with some hop hints, light fruit notes of lemon citrus.
Other Observations: As above
Flavour:
Intensity: Medium
Balance: Edging towards the bitter side, but lots of hop flavour from the base material. Some fruit but this is all very much well in balance and not too pronounced in any aspect.
Flavours: barley, lemon, lime, citrus
Mouthfeel:
Body: Medium (-) – but I am being generous.
Carbonation: Medium
Sensation: slick and drying, but very easy to drink.

Finish:
Intensity: Medium (-)
Length: Medium
Balance: Slightly bitter, not sweet but again, all elements work well together.

Overall
Craftmanship: Good
Freshness: Fresh
Personal Taste: This is a very easy style of IPA (as opposed to some of these see the Hadouken review) and hence the name “Sunday” is given to this as it is a good way to unwind just before the week begins again. This would be a great afternoon session beer, as it is not too alcoholic and slips down well. Half a litre disappears quite quickly and while food might dominate this beer, would work well with a plate of fish and chips for sure. Might be too light for a big Sunday roast, but a great beer for an evening in front of the telly with a film, or good for when playing those retro games such as Super Mario Bros on the NES, or platformers on the SMS.

Re: Favourite Beer

Now time for one from London, North London to be exact:

Image

Beer: Gamma Ray
Brewery: Beavertown Brewery
Brewery Location: North London, London, England (Tottenham)
Presentation: Can and Bottle (tasting was from the can)
Alcohol Level: 5.4%
Style: APA (American Pale Ale)
Price : £2.49
Bought From: Wholefoods Market
Tasting Date: 04/10/15

Appearance:
Colour: Amber
Clarity: Brilliant and with some cloudiness.
Head: Good

Aroma:
Intensity: Medium
Balance: A slight bitterness.
Flavour: Citrus notes with lemon, lime and barley hints.
Other Observations: The aromas smell as if this could be quite a strong beer. Has a good backbone.
Flavour:
Intensity: Medium +
Balance: Well balanced between fruit flavours and the base material
Flavours: Lemon, Lime, Barley hops.
Mouthfeel:
Body: Medium bodied, good barley grip.
Carbonation: Medium, not too gassy.
Sensation: Has a strong bite early doors when drinking but this is settles down as the you continue with it and it is a very pleasant beer to sip on.

Finish:
Intensity: Medium
Length: Medium +
Balance: Slightly bitter but has good fruit flavours too.

Overall
Craftmanship: Very good
Freshness: Fresh
Personal Taste: I do love this beer, one of my favourites (especially with spicy food or in hot weather) BUT having tasted the bottled version, I do prefer this slightly. Beavertown are very strong on canning all their brews and while they do some in bottles, prefer to sell in cans. Again, the can does slightly affect flavour, but it does not dull the enjoyment. You would love this beer if you hadn’t tasted the bottled version.

Game Pairing: Any fast paced shmup would work here, but I have gone for Destroy All Humans on the PS2. The can design inspired the choice....

Time for another review:

Image

Beer: Dead Pony Club Session Pale Ale
Brewery: Brewdog
Brewery Location: Scotland
Presentation: 330ml can
Alcohol Level: 3.8%
Style: Session Pale Ale
Price: £1.89
Bought From: Wholefoods Market (no longer available)
Tasting Date: 29/10/15

Appearance:
Colour: A light amber colour
Clarity: Clear, but a rich depth to the beer.
Head: Good head ,that dissipates quite quickly.

Aroma:
Intensity: Medium
Balance: Medium
Flavour: Hops are to the fore, with some fruit on it, lemon and lime hints
Other Observations: None
Flavour:
Intensity: Medium +
Balance: Very well balanced, has the bitterness of a pale ale but enough fruit to not be pleasant on the palate.
Flavours: Hoppy with lemon, lime, citrus
Mouthfeel:
Body: Medium – really easy to drink.
Carbonation: Excellent.
Sensation: Great hop notes and slips down very easily. A great session ale.

Finish:
Intensity: Medium
Length: Medium
Balance: Medium

Overall
Craftmanship: Excellent
Freshness: Very fresh,
Personal Taste: One of the best session ales that I have tasted yet. Lots of great fruit and hop flavours to keep you interested and goes down very easily with no real bitterness on the aftertaste. This is a beer best drunk on its own, as it is light enough to down on a warm day or in a pub, but food might be too much for this one, although again fried fish or even fried chicken would work nicely.

Gaming Match: Any sports title. This is a great party beer so any party game would work too!

Have any of you tried Lindemans Kriek? Lindemans Apple and Faro are also excellent choices. Can recommend those three Belgian lambic beers to anyone who's into Belgian beer or special beer!

Stella Artois, straight from the fridge. I was always a cider drinker but fancied some lager once and bought a pack of Stella and just really liked it

Check out Brewdog Jack hammer if you get the chance if you haven't tried it. It is Punk IPA but pumped up to the max with a nice bitterness.

Recently due to the influx of polish people in my town over the past couple of years, our local off licence has started stocking polish beers and its strong stuff!

Zubr@6% and Tyskie@5.6% seem to be the ones I have settled on, also Desperados I hated when I first tried it but now it got the taste for it

Re: Favourite Beer

Postby ninjaalex » Wed Jul 20, 2016 7:17 pm

Here we go lads, a proper review not my favourite beer.

Tetley's Smoothflow

Image

Price: Expect pay around £1-£1.50 a can.
ABV: a weak 3.6%

Style:Looks like an amber ale to me with a big creamy head. The can contains a widget\nitro.

Aroma: Not much to go on. Sort of a barnyard smell of grass, hay and a bit of lemon and sour cream.

Taste: A bit of caramel\toffee, sweet malt, the lemony grassy after taste is also present as is a metallic taste possibly due to it being a can, but the metallic taste does seem to be present in many nitro creamy ales such as: Boddingtons and Caffreys. The beer also tastes watered down which is never a good thing, this seems very common with domestic mass-produced UK beers and lagers.

Score: 2\5

Gaming pairing: A bland beer deserves an average game I was thinking arcade game Vigilante, but as it's a smooth beer, it needs a smooth jazzy game so Blue Brothers from Titus it is.
