Got myself a nice copy of Deathsmiles Deluxe Edition this week. Got that and Akai Katana now.

Now for Dodonpachi Resurrection to complete the shmup set (as advised by fellow RetroCollectees) unless I've missed any...

Thanks for the tip off Gunstarhero and thanks for the compliment Caranten ;)

Got a nice copy of Skyrim Legendary Edition for £1 today so I'm steadily building this lot up. I must have more than 30 of them now and going for RPGs, Shmups, 505 and obscures. Think the hardest to find title I have at the moment is Zoo Tycoon.

Not too many 505, RPGs and Shmups PAL, so you should be good!

However look over the water and there is some lovely obscure games like Truck racer, bloodbath and Kick Ass 2

Zoo tycoon is alluding me too, i see the xbone one all the time,

Also decided to go for Limited and Collectors editions whilst they're still fairly cheap. Won a bundle of 4 today for just £7 including postage.

I'm beginning to get tempted by LE/CE as well... picked up a few as I see them for decent prices. I'm also liking the ones with slip covers, have a few of those so far.

I have made my own list with the different resources, like the MasterList on this site and the old Wikipedia list.
The biggest problem was the Wikipedia part. There are some games in PAL format that are not released in EU, because they are late canceled in the production proces.

Despite having a PS4 since launch, this generation of games has really bounced off me: too many sequels, remasters, 50gb Day 1 patches, games-as-service micro transaction loot box gouging and battle bloody royale for my liking, let alone how toxic the online experience can be. Not to say I haven’t had some great gaming times with the PS4 but, considering it’s nearly 6 years into its lifespan, it really hasn’t inspired me in the way the previous generation did.

For me, despite having started all the way back in 1983 on a Spectrum, the mid to late 2000s was probably the most exciting and inspiring time for me personally as a gamer, so now that I’ve finally got a bit of time on my hands to enjoy and rejoin the collecting community, and inspired by the info shared in this thread, I’m going to be concentrating on OG Xbox and 360 collecting, with a side order of PS2, PS3 and GameCube exclusives.

The Xbox 360 plan: scour the local shops and Facebook marketplace for decent quality low hanging fruit, pick up limited and collectors editions where going cheap and upgrade games when a better example comes along, Classic editions allowed if they are the only way to get all DLC etc on disc and take stock of where I’ve got to in 6 months and weigh up whether to go for a full PAL set or specialise in certain subsets.

Annoyingly, years of game lending to friends, much regretted trade ins etc have left me with this bare bones base to build on:

But still it’s a start! And the Borderlands 2 slip cover is still pretty mint so a good opener for that particular subset.

So off to CEX Lancaster to begin bulking this rather anaemic looking collection back up. A lot of shelf scouring and manual checking later (along with a good cleaning session once home) and the following have been added:

I’m not usually fussed on steelbooks due to the scruffy scuffing most end up with but the Crackdown 2 case was in lovely condition and the art has an almost 3D look. Shame the game itself is supposedly not up to much.

So a decent first foray, and collecting aside, there is a ridiculous amount of quality gaming in that lot for the princely sum of £27.

That's a great looking start. Certainly lots to get stuck in to if you do plan to play them. I have found Cex generally have been really good value. I usually have a good look at the cases and manuals and avoid terrible condition, if discs have been scratched I've not had any that wouldn't play. I have walked out of there before with 15 Xbox 360 games for a tenner.

I feel like I am at a bit of a crossroads when it comes to my 360 collection. To scratch my collecting itch, I had initially decided to go for all 360 titles that were released in UK that did not appear on PS3 or Wii. My issue is that each time I get something like a dancing game, or most recently... "Let's Cheer" I start to question why I'm buying such things. I guess it's my collector vs my gamer battling it out in my head. Collector is saying "you get it because it's part of the set", gamer is saying "I'm never going to play this, ahem, stuff".

So, seemingly day to day I can change my mind between "why not go for a full PAL set" and "offload the rubbish I've got already and concentrate on stuff I will actually play".

Do other people battle with such things?

It’ll be interesting to see how I feel once I get past the “picking shedloads of games up on the cheap” phase and am faced with having to pay out more substantial sums for games that, from a critical standpoint, may be of dubious merit. I would imagine it’s a pretty common psychological seesaw amongst collectors: where does it stray from a passionate interest into treating them like fetish objects?

As a father of 2 toddlers with a pretty demanding job and (if I’m lucky) an hour or two a night to game, I’ve come to accept that I’m never going to have time to properly play the 100s of games I already own, let alone if I proceed to add 100s more to my collection. One of the appeals of targeting the 360 is that, even if I only get to play an hour or two of a game, at these prices they still represent a pretty good pound to entertainment ratio! The combinations of higher prices and more punishing difficulty levels of the 8 and 16 bit generations make it personally harder to justify collecting them in comparison, especially as my gamer skills have very much atrophied with lack of practice.

One of the things this thread has shown me is that the 360 has some really interesting nooks and crannies lurking in its library beyond the more obvious AAA titles that even I wasn’t aware of which will hopefully keep me enthused as more money and time need to be invested in adding stuff to my collection.

Honestly, the main reason I chose 360 to scratch the collecting itch is because of the price. You can get so many good titles for under £2, as well as a lot of others that may not be so good but add to the collection. That's not the only reason though, I have always loved the 360, if it was just down to price PS3 would have been just as cheap I think.

If money was no object I'd prefer to collect seriously for SNES or Mega Drive, but for now I am happy to pick up a few games for those each month, and right now these will always be ones I loved as a kid, ones I always wanted to play or otherwise ones considered to be classics/must plays. On top of this, I also have loads of other consoles to grab the odd game for if I find good deals.

I also know that I'll never play every game to completion, but what I am trying to do is have at least a quick 20-30 mins go on every one, and those that I feel I would enjoy I'm adding to a play list that I would hope to eventually get through.

As you've said, looking through these threads and also picking up games just because they are part of a set is a good way to find something that might be right up my street that I may never have even given a second look otherwise.

I think for now I will crack on. :)

Question for someone who may have it in their collection or know more about it... My Body Coach 3.

Now, as far as I can tell there was a UK release, but all I have been able to find are photos of the case which only have German (I think) and French text on the back. So my question is, was there a version with English text on the back or is the one I'm seeing the only PAL one there was? Not a pressing issue but it's bugging me as I'm not sure what I should be looking out for with this one.
