Re: Dreamcast Collectors Unite

Hey Dreamcast Fanboys/girls! Ok, so basically due to some extra income I'm juggling a few ideas around about what to buy; one of those ideas is getting a Dreamcast. I've had a good research of the games and it's pretty obvious there's some good looking stuff on it: Shenmue, Skies of Arcadia, Soul Calibur, M. Vs. C. 1+2...

A couple of things I'd like some expert knowledge on is:

How reliable is the DC? My local store guy tells me it's a touch temperamental (up there with the NES he said )

Are there any hidden gems that I may have missed in my searches that could sway my decision? (And are there any decent Shmups on there as that's not a genre I've seen pop on it much except for Ikaruga and Bangai-O).
&
With games like Resident Evil: Code Veronica, M. Vs. C. 2 and other cross-console games, how do the Dreamcast versions do compared with the other three consoles.

 Sorry quite a lot there to work with, but I wanna make sure I settel on the right console for me.

Thanks :D

I'll try and help here...

I've had countless DC's come and go and never had any issues with reliability.

There's an amazing amount of Shmups though not too many PAL versions, Gunbird 2 and Giga Wing are available here. If you're willing to import then things get interesting, some classics include :

Under Defeat
Border Down
Triggerheart Exelica
Last Hope
Chaos Field

And many more.

Hidden Gems for me would include Rez (if you count that as hidden), Cosmic Smash (import), Lack of Love (import), Cannon Spike, Skies of Arcadia, Tech Romancer, Record of Lodoss War, Space Channel 5, Elemental Gimmick Gear (import) etc etc

If you dig deep and are willing to import the DC is an amazing machine.

Can't comment on the cross platform versions as I tend to just stick to the DC.

5 years ago I had a huge selection, 200+ titles, and decided to sell everything to fund a 360, worst thing I've ever done and have started to put it back together again bit by bit.

Anyway hope that helps. :)

Thanks GregPandemic. You've given me a fair few games to think about. I'm glad to hear that you never had any issues with reliability.
Hope you manage to track down your 200+ games! :D

My Dreamcast is still my day 1 machine :D still works like a Dream. I think its a nice machine to collect, the cases tend to break (ie you get a lot of broken ones), but you can buy brand new ones on eBay at the moment, least the cases are unique, not just a DVD case.

Now to my mind, the Dreamcast was at the end of PS1's life, so many games I think are the best version's.

One thing to *ALWAYS* check on with the DC is the player one port as it's the most used it can sometimes have issues with not picking up the controller.
Overheating is generally not a problem as long as the machine's intake vent isn't obscured, but as with most consoles it's best to let it rest every so often just in case.

Generally if you look after it you'll be free of problems :3

196 to go, here! :)

Bagged Time Stalkers in a 3-pack for the equivalent of £2.83 - my first "rare" (according to RC) game!

Just picked up a VGA cable for the machine as well. Was absolutely blown away with the difference. I knew it would be better, but....wow!

Well, i'm now at 1 game left after picking this up last week:
Image

Was quite pleased with it, as I took a gamble on buying it from Amazon.fr (without knowing how to speak French myself) - but for £16 quid it was a bit of a bargain!

So yep, just 1 left, and then on to the variants and everything else I can find to add to the collection!
(oh and i'm after the white promo discs too!)

Space_turnip - WOW! That's a heck of a bargain. Nicely done!

Check this out, if you want a laugh.

Never released, but got to promo stage, but then the promos were never distributed. £2,000. :)

OUCH.

He has listed that in the past on more than one occasion, each time it's a getting cheaper BiN price, if he wants to sell it he should just do a 99p start.

That guy is actually active on a german forum and got laughed at over there with his neverending saga of putting it on eBay for over the top BINs.
