I may not be a GameBoy collector but I'm certainly a GameBoy lover!
Fairly recently bought myself an original GameBoy with a few games to treat myself to something I always wanted as a kid. Now have my eye on a GameBoy micro, though they seem to be a little more expensive than I'd like...

Mine are for playing though, not for keeping in pristine condition.

Can anyone recommend me some good games? I have Supermario 1 and 2, and Tetris, am on the look out for Kirby and Double Dragon too...

I'm no Gameboy expert (though I love the ole breezeblock) but some of my favourites are Wario Land, the Donkey Kong Land series, Super RC Pro-Am, Star Wars and Mickey's Dangerous Chase. None of those should cost more than a quid or two.

Slightly pricier but well worth it: Metroid II, Final Fantasy Legend series, Mega Man series, Revenge of the Gator, Bubble Ghost, Kid Icarus, Gargoyle's Quest and Pokemon Red/Blue/Yellow.

First I must say Hello, My first gamesystem as a kid was a gameboy and prefer them over a television console anyday. I found this thread because I have a question.

I have a Gameboy Color (GCB-001) that is the Yellow/Blue Pokemon Limited Edition one. However it's missing the pokemon that should be on the edge of the viewing screen. I began to wonder, are they stickers and the person I bought it from peeled them off or is this a "misprint" if you will or possibly someone replaced the screen with a different gameboy color screen? The battery cover appears to come from a green Gameboy Color but I'm curious if this is still "rare". It has the Pokemon logo near the Select/Start buttons and the Blue colored direction pad as well as the green and red A-B buttons.

Thanks, Long Live Nintendo.

Just bought another GBP on eBay! It was a tab expensive but cheaper than they normally sell for :D. My Extreme Green GBP i ordered a while ago should be arriving soon after a kerfuffle with the posting but i will post pictures ASAP

I think i only have 4/5 i need left, all of which will be again be on the expensive side! Depending on what eBay listing there are i might be able to finish a complete GBP collection by the end of the year, next summer by the latest hopefully!

Whoa, she's a beaut!

I wonder, how many of you collect to complete a set and how many of you collect to play the gameboys?

This week I have been enjoying Kirby's Dreamland - what a great game!

That Extreme Green is gorgeous. Don't suppose you would sell me it ;) Where did you manage to get it from?

I've just bought a complete silver pocket with the black screen. I've finally got all the regular colours.

This is my collection without the 2 silver pockets. Image

I'm going to be adding more in the future and i'll put up an updated pic when the other silver gets here.

I'm going to be getting some Japanese pockets soon enough as well. Some of them look stunning.

myates - I collect and play gameboys. I've always loved the Gameboy and the Game Gear due to being in the hospital a lot when i was younger and all i did was play on them. Now my love for them has only intensified so i enjoy collecting and playing at the same time :)

@Myates, I collect but the consoles and the games and play them a lot, although i mainly use a SP to play because of the screen and rechargeable battery! The Gameboy (Pocket) will always hold a special place in gaming for me being the first console i ever had.

@Mickylynch9, Fantastic collection of both consoles and games, congratulations on completing the standard console set :D . How was it finding the pink and silver black screen consoles boxed? They were the hardest for met to find at a decent price, with the pink just being a pain to find at all! I like the GBP yellow set you have, these bundled consoles seem to go for way higher than the normal boxed consoles, like £30-50 on eBay.
Also cracking boxed games and i'm jealous with how many you have, where did you get them all from. I may be interested in a bunch of the loose carts when you sell them, i would love to go for boxed games but i never find them at carboots and eBay prices are too high for me!.

If anyone is interested i saw this listed the other day on Ebay.com, http://www.ebay.com/itm/Nintendo-Game-Boy-Pocket-Grey-Edition-JAPAN-IMPORT-BOXED-/120934837287?pt=Video_Games&hash=item1c28472c27#ht_646wt_1396 at a pretty cheap price. It's in America so you would have to message the seller asking for international postage (USPS is noramlly $15 to the UK) plus they are accepting offers so you might be able to get it cheaper!

The pink was actually pretty easy for me as I didn't know about it until it popped up one day as BIN on ebay for just £20 so i snapped it up. The silver with black screen has been the trickier. I've seen it 4 times now and 3 times it was in a bundle and the sellers wouldn't sell it to me. Then on Friday last week it came up as BIN for £24.89 so I snapped it up straight away. It arrived today :)

I would say about 20-30 of the boxed games are my original games from back in the day and the rest have all been bought from ebay. I live over in Ireland so it's really hard to find stuff out in the wild here.

I've just messaged the guy about that grey pocket. I've been looking for that for ages now. If he won't send me it i'm going to get him to send it to my cousin over there and they can send it on to me. Fingers crossed :)

I managed to get an amazing gameboy the other day as well which i will post a pic of when/if it arrives. I'm **** myself it won't get here.

I'm definitely selling the loose carts, I have a thread over on the for sale boards which contains all the games i have there. It should still be on the 1st page.

Awesome! I got lucky with the silver gameboy with black screen too, stumbled across a random Japanese listing with a bunch of cool Japanese games.

Is it a gameboy pocket you are waiting on, or another gameboy model? I know the feeling in wondering if it will arrive and in good nick, the extreme green came from America and there had some problems over there and by the time it was actually sent out and on it's way i had moved out of my Uni House and came back home. I had to wait for my housemate to get it and send it on, really glad to have it now, the box had some of the paper missing on the top tab but the console is in fantastic shape!
:D
I just had a look at the games in your sale thread, going on holiday in a week so i will have to hold off until afterwards as i need spending/drinking money! But there is defiantly some i am interested in, maybe we could work out a trade.

I don't want to say too much about the gameboy i've got but it is a pocket and i can't believe i got it as i'd never seen one boxed until i saw this thread then i went and looked it up and found a great deal so i snapped it up. It's the priciest pocket i've bought so far but i really don't care as it's absolutely gorgeous and worth every penny to me. It won't get here for a while yet though.

I'm happy to trade when you get back from holiday. :D

Got this in the post today, as always i am amazed by the speed of the Japanese Postal service!

Image

ANA branded GBP, ANA is a Japanese airline and these were sold on the flights i guess. The console is in mint condition and the color is fantastic, a real shame it was never released without the branding. :D

Not many to go now, there has some really obscure ones which i'm not sure i will ever get my hands on but i will always try too!

That looks class. I've never seen that one either. It's going to take me quite a while getting more Gameboys as i collect Sega GG's as well. They are the only 2 systems i collect variations for. I hope to get a couple of advance sp's but my main focus for the gameboy is just the original and pocket versions. Might even add some light versions in the future if i can complete the pocket collection.

After this amazing gameboy arrives i'm going to focus on the Japanese variations. I missed out on that grey pocket you put a link of. The guy was willing to send it to my cousin in america but i couldn't get a hold of them until after it had already sold  It went for £32 i think. Absolute bargain.

Unlucky with the grey gameboy it was a real steal at that price and would have snapped it up myself for resale if i wasn't trying to save money! I'm really interested in what this GB you are waiting on is now, i always love a little anticipation and it will be nice to see another collector expand their collection. :D

If you need to decent site to look at what editions there are, www.consolecolors.com is a good start however they are missing a few editions such as the gold GBP, so you can use the wikipedia page to see any others.

I just looked at the Sega Game Gear variants and never realized there was so many, how do you deal with them normally having buggered screens?

Also, the original gameboys shouldn't be too hard if you go for unboxed, but stupidly hard and expensive if you are going for a complete boxed collection. Many of the Play it Loud consoles came in plastic cases with paper inserts which are nearly always missing. :( If/When i finish GBP collection i might venture further into GBA SP as some of the editions are just amazing and they looks nice out on display, but again the cost will be worse than GBP seeming there has so many different editions. (Around 50ish!!)

I know a couple of guys that replace all the capacitors on the GG. They can all usually be refurbished and brought back to life. I have the original version, Coca Cola and Ninku light blue versions. All are boxed and the Coca Cola GG even comes with the white slip cover over the box which is really rare and hard to get. I'm hoping to add a complete White GG in the future which was never released. It was only ever sent out to developers. Only 10,000 were produced.

I'm only going for fully complete gameboys. It's going to take me longer and more money but i know it'll be worth it when i get them. I'm enjoying seeing other collections here myself. I'm on youtube and don't see too many people collecting for the gameboy but i have only recently got into the retro community on youtube so i'm sure i'll find fellow gameboy enthusiasts at some point.

BOOM!!!

This thread hasn't been posted in for a while, surprising considering the amount of GB collectors around here :D !

Anywhoo, after getting down to the final couple of games needed for my Mega Drive set (2 common + LvsC) I decided it was time for a new project, and after much deliberation I settled on collecting for the Game Boy/Color/Advance! I'm only gonna be collecting cart only games, mainly due to space issues, but also because I don't like cardboard boxes, but I've decide I'm going for full PAL sets for each of them :). I started off with 8 games, an original GB and a Tribal SP (Cheers NokGod, still owe you for that one!) and I have already more than quadrupled my game count !

I'll update this post with pictures when I get home later but basically I'm looking for recommendations of good games, mainly on the GBC, as well as info on any games that are hard to find so I know what to keep an eye out for on my travels.

If anyones interested I'm gonna be doing a Gameplay of each and every GB game I pick up over on my YouTube channel too :)
