A friend of mine who had a 3DO back in the day (along with myself - 3DO owners were few and far between so you tended to know who else had one!) had a problem with his console and it took some time to repair. When it was retuned by 3DO they included a few brand new games and one of these I distinclty remember was Daedalus Encounter. You are right, the double jewel case does not fit into the long box. Even the long boxed packaged multi-disc games I do have for the 3DO either come in cardboard slip-sleeves within the long box or in a smaller jewel case or two.

Yeah so I'm thinking that game is a PAL release, and maybe they forgot to print an ELSPA age rating on the back cover so quickly did a sticker for the case?

I'm also thinking if there's any longcase games that had long manuals within them, if there's any single case games that are the same game we have with manuals that just fit the single case, if so they must be PAL versions too? As they created a manual special for the smaller case. Or did the longcase games also have a smaller manuals for the single-CD cases aswell as a long manual included too?

Haven't bought it yet, but I know the guy I got these from has a longbox Killing Time with a single cd case which hold the manual (you know, the front cover is the manual) so not all US games have long manuals like Quarantine

Hydr0x said it before, it's a bloody mess. Some games do stat where they were made though, just like Darkstalker90 says. Maybe we should indeed go with a complete list to start with and over time, we'll fill in the gaps (variations)?

Like I said in the other thread. Not all longbox game have a longbox manual. My plumbers don't wear ties and my Super Street Fighter are both in longbox and have their manual as jewel case inlay.

And who says that double CD cases don't fit into longboxes? I have Deadalous Encounter in Longbox on my shelf and the double CD case fits in perfectly...

Whoa, you are indeed correct sir. I've just found my USA long box and the ELSPA double case for Deadalus Encounter and it fits as snug as anything!!!

Well there are different varieties of longboxes. There's the one above then there are the others that are like board game boxes or big box PC games i.e. with the lid that lifts off. I have Hell: A Cyberpunk Thriller in the big box and that is the latter. Quite thick card too actually.

As for the Daedalus Encounter, I've just looked at the small print on the back of the case and it clearly says "Manufactured and and distributed by Matsushita Electric Corporation of America". It also says "Made in USA" at the bottom of the box. This copy I have also has the ELSPA sticker on the back suggesting that it was a US copy that was imported. Unless somebody has a copy of this game that has different smallprint on the back or something different to the ELSPA sticker then I guess we just have to assume that the game was never officially EU localised, just imported.

Does the big box have US ratings on the cover? Just wondering whether they binned those for the EU release and stuck ELSPA ratings on to otherwise blank (in terms of ratings) jewel cases.

Additionally, the B&W manual has a section about warranty etc. at the very front and it only lists American addresses and contact details.

there are even more diffent kinds of big boxes. besides the normal cardboard longboxes there are the ones you descirbed like Hell, Wing Commander 3. The 3rd type are the box EA mostly used with a snap on the right to open and close the boxed. the games weren't in jewelcases in the bigbox, they are directly in the bigbox. I'm sure everyone knows them:

Image

@Tinsair: the box alone won't help us. I think you have to look for the warranty information in the manual (US or Europe contacts) and/or the sentence on the back of the case "displays in letterbox on PAL Systems".

I'll have to have a look at that when I have a bit more time on my hands then.

I have Space Ace in that exact same case (mines missing the manual) I always wondered what was held in the other compartment next to the CD, now I know :)

Coming up with a starting point list for the 3DO isn't the problem, it's really distinguishing European and US releases. Double hard for me as I don't own any 3DO games. Feel free to donate some for investigation

Yeah I was thinking of compiling a list on here of all the US/PAL games with variations and then maybe separating any that we find are 100% PAL.

@hydr0x, I did have a few spare 3DO games a few years ago, but alas I sold them

As I've been thinking about The Deadalous Encounter fitting in a longbox, looking at the longboxes I have (clip close style) they have a compartment built into the box to hold the Disc & Manual (be it a long or small manual). So there's noway a Double-CD case would fit in it, also seen longbox versions of alot of my Double-CD cases & they have the built in compartments I mentioned.

Also with The Deadalous Encounter, the box opens up on the top allowing for the Double-CD case to slip in, but with many longbox games they have the clip close style box & that's not possible. Also noticed that I tried to put a Double-CD case alongside one of my longboxes & they are exactly the same width which means that it would be impossible to fit in if it didn't have a built in compartment anyway, so The Deadalous Encounter longbox must be slightly wider to accomodate the Double-CD case.

And finally, a reason maybe why The Deadalous Encounter was in a Double-CD case & then put in a top opening longcase was because it was 4 CD's? Of course a normal longbox could only hold maybe 2 CD's at the most with a manual. So that maybe would explain why it had a Double-CD case, it was just packaged in a longbox in the US so it fitted in with the rest of the games? Plus over in Europe they just took the game out of the longbox & sold it just in the Double-CD case but forgot to put an ELSPA age rating sticker on the case or maybe there wasn't enough room on the case without covering other information?

This is just a thought and if right apart from The Deadalous Encounter & any other top opening longboxes that have Double-CD cases inside I'd guess that all other Double-CD cases ARE PAL releases.

What's peoples thoughts on this? :)

also....3do used there own ratings board until 1994, when the esrb took over, any ratings before that were the developers descretion, so any game with a esrb sticker is just a game made before the rating.

im pretty sure any jewel case with a letterbox message is ntsc, as otherwise it would run full screen on a pal machine, if it was intended for pal usage

I had a loose disc copy of this (before I sadly sold all my 3DO gear) and I swear it had a BBFC ratings sticker on the CD. I might be wrong but I'm 95% positive that I did.

I'm still gutted about the time I paid £40 for CIB copies of Supermodels, Blonde Justice and two other of these sorts of 'games' (one had something to with vampires I think?) on ebay which was quite cheap and the seller claimed they had 'lost' them. I never did manage to find them at reasonable prices ever again.

It's all elementary now of course since I no longer have a 3DO but it's still a platform that fascinates me :)

I think I see them a few years ago must have been the same auction but couldn't remember if they had any stickers on. It would be good to get all of these listed if possible, I'm sure a PAL list can be sorted out.
