N64 collectors unite

Postby gunstarhero » Fri Sep 30, 2011 5:59 pm

I've searched to see if this thread has been started elsewhere and could not find one, so felt it necessary to get one going to discuss all things Nintendo 64. Anyone looking at my profile will see that I have the N64 listed as my favourite console to have collected for to date (past tense because I have a full and complete boxed PAL collection). Anyone else have a full PAL set or going in that direction?

Nice, good console to collect for in my humble opinion. The Austalian exclusive PAL versions of SNOWBOARD KIDS 2 and STAR CRAFT 64 are not easy to find in a decent condition box nowadays. There are many games that are really hard to find that many would just pass up if they saw them, such as NFL Quaterback Club 2000, which is incredibly hard to find, especially boxed. The Retro Collect written article in Retro Gamer a few months back on the N64 was spot on as regards to the consoles rarities. There are a lot of superb games such as Conkers Bad Fur Day which consistently fetch high prices, but it's not particularly hard to find by any stretch of the imagination, just very much sought after.

I would say AIRBOARDER 64 is one of the hardest PAL games to find. Fortunatley, most of the gems for the N64 aren't too difficult to find for a decent price. Naturally, condition of the games box has a significant bearing on the value of a game if complete. I just think the N64 had so many great triple A titles - if you put the top 20 PAL PS1 games up against the top 20 PAL N64 games, for example (bit of a subjective argument as we all have varying tastes in genres, but you can probably catch my drift in that I would be including Super Mario 64; Goldeneye; Conkers Bad Fur Day; Banjo Kazooie/Tooie etc,. in my top 20) - I think you would really struggle to choose which was the better selection, but I'd probably come down on the side of the N64.

The N64 does have a very good percentage of quality titles, has anyone else got Ridge Racer 64 for example??
A great "mix up" of the original and revolution, with it's own exclusive tracks as well

You cant mention the N64 without Goldeneye either, superb at the time (I was lucky enough to get this console around 6 months after it was released in UK), and it also had IMO the best Wrestling game on it WWF No Mercy - much better than those Smackdown games.....

From a collecting point though, I suppose it's harder to get complete games in good condition due to their cardboard boxes.....however, I have kept all of mine since buying them new back in the day.....although I really only have a small selection of titles for it.

A great and ofter overlooked console - was overshadowed somewhat by the PS1 IMO

I'm currently collecting the N64 PAL library. I started out just collecting cart only but as of late I've started to upgrade some of my games to CIB as and when I can get them at a good price.

I only need around 7 carts to complete the collection, one of which being Starcraft 64 (probably the most expensive PAL game).

The rarest N64 games IMO are or seem to be Starcraft 64, Snowboard Kids 2, Airboarders 64, Hercules, Blues Brothers 2000, Top Gear Hyper Bike and Shadow Gate 64 (English version).

always grew up with thep ps1 so naturally have a soft spot for the ps1 however the n64 is such a good little system and holds some fantastic titles like you say cbfd banjo goldeneye, i mean if it wasnt for goldeneye i doubt there would be any call of duty today!

I have had pretty much everysingle n64 title out there from carbooting over the past few years and buying out peoples collections who clearly had no clue off the value to the games but regretted alway selling them on and not keeping atleast 1 copy off every game that was complete and vgc+ since ive had pretty much everysingle pal englsh title out there except for a few off the australian releases and a couple off others like starcraft and what not. The games for the system demand such a high price because the games on it are truely amazing and theres such a high demand for it out there.

As for the collecting part off it i have recently decided to start collecting for the system a couple months back, not religously or a full pal collection but as and when i see a boxed complete in vgc copy off a game that i want to play or if its rare then ill add it to the collection. Ive always kept away from buying on ebay as its all about the chase in finding those games for 50p or pound, thats the best bit off it for me, and im sure gunstar will share the same feeling on that one :)

I like the N64, it does look nasty in pal though but not to bad on a 14'' tv.

I used to have a JP one with around 40 mint boxed games but I sold it and wish I hadn't now. It has a smaller library of quality but what is good is generally amazing.

F-Zero, Wave Race, Star Fox, World Driver Championship, ISS, Doom, Goldeneye, Goemon, Zelda, Mario 64, Smash Bros, Pilotwings, Mario Party, Banjo, Donkey Kong, Mario Kart and Diddy Kong Racer are all essential titles from the top of my head.

I'm going for a full PAL-UK boxed N64 collection. I originally bought the console when it came out in 1997 - the year I started secondary school, and kept buying games right until 2001 when it made way for the gamecube and I left to go to college. So I literally grew up with n64 and it still holds a special place in my heart. I decided last summer to add to the games I already had and it's a lot more challenging than I first thought it would be, especially trying to get the boxes in a decent condition but thoroughly rewarding when you do. 14 months on and I have over 100 games now and hopefully I'll reach the halfway mark by the end of the year 8-)

Aside from the obvious games already mentioned, I highly recommend that anyone with this console gets themselves copies of Blast Corps, Shadowman and Mystical Ninja - all of which are still fairly priced

Blast Corps is a brilliant game, it's just a shame Nintendo and Rare parted company. A sequel on a new gen console would've been great!

I need 56 PAL games for a complete collection.

Agree that Blast Corps should be on the list for any N64 owner. It's a fantastic game and still nothing else like it on any other system.

Sounds like you are doing really well there Tinsair for the complete set, but looking at your collection stats, it looks like you've got a very impressive collection across the board :)

Thanks :)

Yeah, when I left school I practically brought everything in sight  pretty cheap at the time too. The only downside is most of the games I am still needing are rare or very rare ones

Oh and make that 55 games needed for the N64 now as I have purchased NHL Breakaway '98 complete for a BIN of £4.95 including P+P ;)

I was tempted by that auction too, but spent my money elsewhere when I had an offer of £3.50 accepted for a boxed copy of Daikatana 8-)

I think PD was technically the better game, but then it did come out a few years after Goldeneye (I agree that the 360 Perfect Dark was awful - a massive disappointment), but the multiplayer of Goldeneye was fantastic and I always preferered this to Perfect Dark's multiplayer.

Does anyone else have Datel's Action Replay cart for the N64? I have codes on my cart that unlock other Goldeneye single player levels to play as multiplayer - these codes allow you to play single player levels such as CRADLE in multiplayer. I can remember when this cart came out there was a lot of interest from Goldeneye fans simply because of this feature. It's interesting because it suggests that these levels were originally going to be included as multiplayer maps but did not make it to the finished game - but the Datel cart unlocks them!!
There are also other single player levels (such as FACILITY and CAVES) that are scaled down in multiplayer mode on the everyday Goldeneye cart. However, with the Action Replay cart attached with the correct code, you could play multiplayer CAVES and FACILITY in full, going to areas that are in the main game that are not ordinarily accessable in the standard multiplayer game.
Back in the day, I can remember this being like the equivalent of DLC nowadays as suddenly with the Datel cart, you had a host of new levels for multiplayer that were not accessible any other way.

Love my N64, still played just as much as my current gen consoles. I only need a few more games for my n64 collection and a couple of unboxed games which are looking for boxes.
gunstarhero wrote:I have a full and complete boxed PAL collection

Are all your games UK pal (excluding those australians)? I am starting to feel as though I am never going to find a UK Shadowgate 64.

There is a code to see pictures of sean connery and some other old bonds on the multiplayer character select screen.
If you beat the change weapons buttons in the right way while shooting you could mix and match your dual wielding weapons.
I remember if you killed Ouromov with a golden gun or golden pp7 on the silo and used the key he drops in a particular way you could open a panel on the side of one of the missiles (I'm not thinking of the open silo doors trick) but I have forgotten how to do that. I could not find any evidence of this trick on the web so I must have read it in an old ONM. I love goldeneye because of all the tricks and glitches.
Oh, and of course the mystery gun on the back of the box which is also on the back of the display case box.

What games are you still looking for Georgie? All of my games are UK PAL except for the three Australian PAL exclusives and Shadow Gate 64, which is Italian. This is the only blot that I would like to rectify is possible (finding the UK language box) so I'm with you on that one.
