Nearly three years ago I used to work for a large, West Midlands-based regional newspaper which shall go unnamed. I was based on the new media department (i.e. websites), but I primarily spent my time creating content, both editorial and graphical. I also had marketing responsibilities as well, which was nonsense; it's very hard to market anything without a marketing budget.
Then the credit crunch happened, I was made redundant, and now I work for a nearby Tesco store, on the electrical department (so I at least get to use my brain on occasion).
Unfortunately, we're now in another recession and Tesco is closing the store I work for, so I'm going to be made redundant again at the start of next month. Despite their proclamations that they shall be saving the British unemployed by creating 20,000 extra jobs nationwide, they're making nearly 70 people redundant. And they make multiple billion pounds of profit every year.
Yes, it's ridiculous. At least my previous employer was a family-owned business rather than a multinational retail giant, so I could forgive them the need to shed some staff to save their company.
Basically, if you ever see me working at the same place you work at, MOVE. It won't be there for very long if I'm around.
