RetroCollect FM - Retro Gaming Podcast - Issue 11: Sega Dreamcast

RetroCollect-FM-Issue-11-DreamcastHaving recently celebrated its birthday in style, the Sega Dreamcast is still fondly remembered by us all as the system that left us too early. Despite packing plenty of promise and potential for the future, Sega pulled the plug early on what they deemed was doomed by the imminent release of the PlayStation 2. With a plethora of nostalgia at the ready, it’s time for RetroCollect FM to discuss the 128-bit wonder.

No matter which retro gamer you speak to, each and everyone will talk about the Dreamcast with a fond admiration for the impact it had on their gaming lives. Having launched with the likes of Sonic Adventure and Power Stone (in Europe), shortly before seeing hits such as Shenmue, Metropolis Street Racer, and Jet Set Radio, countless memories were to be had with this wonder-machine - and rightly so.

With an incredibly colourful history of ups and downs, the RetroCollect FM host Chris, Tom, Adam and Katsu sit down to reminisce over the what ifs and has beens of Sega’s last stand. Diving into the deep end, expect to hear anecdotes surround the Visual Memory Unit, our first steps into online gaming, our opinion on the best Dreamcast games, and of course a confused look back on the likes of Seaman.

The Shenmue remix is by Audio Sprite - search for him on Soundcloud or Youtube - the full song is awesome!

Another excellent pod cast, you're right about there not being enough time. I always thought the lack of a DVD player was too simple an answer for why the DC failed to capture a wider audience, after all the original Xbox had one and it was still vanquished along with the GameCube by the PS2.

PlayStation was a behemoth brand name, Sony were a huge, very aggressive company with a colossal install and fan base, they would have really had to royally fuck up (a la PS3 initial years) for PS2 not to have outsold everything.

Sony really was a very aggressive company though, they secured the timed exclusivity rights to the Resident Evil numbered main series which is why Code Veronica (originally developed as a sequel to 2) has a sub title and Resident Evil 3 (originally sub titled simply Nemisis/Last Survivor) is a numbered entry.
