RetroCollect FM - Retro Gaming Podcast - Issue 09: Interview with Super Play's Wil Overton

RetroCollect-FM-Issue-09-Interview-Wil-OvertonIn November 1992 a brand new video game magazine was born that set out to do things differently. Super Play wasn't your average publication but instead a glorification of gaming culture from the Far East. With countless gamers inspired by its pages, we caught up with the magazine's prolific artist and contributor - Wil Overton.

It's hard to imagine today, but Overton's cover art is often attributed to being the sole reason many gamers invested their hard earned pennies into specific brand new titles and import classics. Super Play to many was a gaming bible and the spoken word, and if the publication's reviewers weren't impressed with something, it was to be avoided. Elsewhere within, the magazine also covered the rise of Manga and Anime in the West, something which clearly inspired Overton's timeless creations.

Following on from the magazine, Overton went on to further make a name for himself in other publications such as N64 Magazine, shortly before heading over to software publishers Rare. While his time at the then soon-to-be-sold company was turbulent, Overton has more than enough stories to tell about the trials and tribulations of the game's industry and the long lost Gamecube title Dinosaur Planet.

Join the RetroCollect FM hosts, Chris, Karl, Tom, and guest host Greg, as they throw the big questions out there and finally get closure on the art style behind Perfect Dark Zero.

Sorry about that - we do try our best but sometimes, due to the way we record over the internet and with different bandwidths and connection qualities, we do get distortions. Hopefully as time goes on we'll manage to iron these kinks out :)

I also get worried when the subject of Tom's bedroom wall posters comes up! Lol

That high pitched sound distortion made it difficult to listen to, but a very good Pod cast non the less. I'd of liked to ask him about that Turok 2 review though, they were generous to say the least.
