RetroCollect FM - Retro Gaming Podcast - Episode 2: Ultra Project Reality 64

The RetroCollect Squad returns to further discuss their love for retro games - this time tackling the 64-bit offering from Nintendo's headquarters. Smashing apart any fanboy presumptions you may have, we talk in depth about how the console's promising plans lead Nintendo down a troublesome path. It's finally here, episode two of the RetroCollect FM podcast.

Starting out with the initial announcement from Nintendo over what was first dubbed Project Reality and Ultra 64, this month's retro gaming podcast is set to take you on a roller-coaster journey throughout the Nintendo 64's life. But before you panic yourselves over what could have been a long debate about the Nintendo 64's failings, we're quick to praise certain elements of the console and the strong selection of first party releases.

That said, there seems to be a real divide between RetroCollect FM's host Chris and co-hosts Adam and Karl over which games really deserve the 64-bit limelight. Something we may never settle...

Great subject, guys. A few hints on production - place a the mics a little further away and don't handle them as much. Listening to the constant mic noise is distracting and hard to listen to through a whole podcast.

That being said, I really enjoy it and happy that a retro game podcast is finally being produced! Keep it up!

Enjoyed that. i was a die hard sega fanboy at the time but I reckon the N64 is probably my all time fav console. Disagree about banjo being a poor mans mario though, I thought mario was easy and boring, banjo (and DK64) were both better games for me :D! Can't believe no one mentioned Diddy Kong Racing either, such a great game!

It was nice to hear Shadow Man get a mention, I also really enjoyed that on N64 but everyone I tell that to thinks I'm mental :)

If we do a Saturn or PlayStation episode, I would love to go into more detail as to why I was cold on the N64.

I feel bad for not mentioning my love of Operation Winback :(

Fondest memories on a mates N64 at Uni in student dorms. 14" TV, 4 player Bust-a-move 3DX. No wonder my eyesight is rubbish these days.

Thanks for the podcasts. Look forward to more. Would agree with the notes on the production by 'breakupthespace ' a few comments up. Look forward to more podcasts. Most enjoyable part for me is that I love to hear your all your anecdotes and little stories etc. Would welcome more podcasts focussing on individual systems, computers (Amiga, Acorn, PC gaming etc) . Maybe one about videogame magazines, one about videogame TV shows. That should keep you going.

That was great to listen to, I never owned an N64 but I did play Goldeneye a lot at a friends house, never had so much multiplayer fun with an FPS ever

Again another awesome show, Id definitely welcome more shows on something more obscure than Nintendo or Sega, maybe the handheld war of the early 90s between the Game Boy, Game Gear and Lynx

Weirdest N64 design choice for me wasn't the odd controller or the idiotic skimping on RAM, it was the lack of dedicated sound hardware. The Reality Co-processor ended up being a conflicted beast with programmers having to make a trade-off between graphical performance and sound channels. Each sound channel used approximately 1% of the RCP's clock time meaning less power for shifting the pictures about. Silly Nintendo.

I can't understand the hate for Banjo Kazooie! maybe Tooie and DK64 but B-K was great. Agree on not mentioning Diddy Kong Racing, was a great game and much better than Mario Kart. Also the four controller ports was pretty big, multiplayer on the N64 was much more fun than any other console of the era.

Great Podcast! Just one thing that im missing. Why not talk a little bit more about the Retrocollect website and the news that you posted. on the Podcast? Talk about whats going on at Retrocollect. Talk about the collections and what future updates you are planning!
And it would be really fun if you could talk about some of the news you posted, if there is a new rom-hack like the Bubble Bobble: Lost Cave arcade hack, have you tested it, what did you think about it. did you like the idea of the hack? etc. Simply put, More Retrocollect related stuff on the Retrocollect podcast! :)
