If you thought the efforts of the existing fan translations that have been released were impressive, wait till you hear about this. The Japanese exclusive NEC PC Engine CD RPG known as Ys IV: The Dawn of Ys has not only seen its in-game text translated, but also the in-game spoken dialogue re-dubbed by a talented range of voice actors.
Ys? Unfamiliar with the RPG series? You're not alone. Outside of Japan only a handful of adventures in this incredible RPG series have been available to English speaking audiences - at least until the modern era arrived which brought a majority of Ys games out of Japan. Should you be wanting to experience the series before tackling this fan project, dust off your Sega Master System and get hold of Y's: The Vanished Omens.
According to the recent release made on the PC Engine FX forums, the English dub of Ys IV: The Dawn of Ys has been in the works for 8 years now. While this seems like quite a long time for a single video game translation, the project's co-ordinator had held lengthy auditions prior to recording to find the right voices for each character. Overall around 20 voice actors have contributed to the project, giving it an incredibly authentic feel worthy of an official release.
While there was already an existing fan translation of Ys IV: The Dawn of Ys available to download, this new effort brings the entire game up to scratch as if it was intended for English audiences all along. But don't disregard this prior piece of work just yet - it is recommended you apply this existing patch to Ys IV: The Dawn of Ys to get the most out of the game, as well as the fan dub patch.
