XBand Online Retro Gaming Service Revisited and Revived

X-Band-Retro-Gaming-Modem-RevisitedForget Xbox Live or the Playstation Network, the 1994 service that was ahead of its time is making a special come back. Offering live scoreboards and online multiplayer gaming for the Sega Megadrive and Super Nintendo, the XBand is making a return.

Sadly the original launch of the XBand didn't go too smoothly. The developers Catapult Entertainment were running on a small budget and put most of their time into producing a fantastic service, but unfortunately had little left to advertise with. By the time the service was available across the USA in 1996, it was removed just a year later due to the lack of players online, mostly due to them not being aware the service existed.

If the service is something you're not familiar with, here is a quick YouTube clip of the original promotion video.

If anything, the device was a good decade ahead of its time setting the standards for the online gaming services we know and love today. But luckily for the hardcore retro gamers, a small team of enthusiasts have managed to get their hands on the original source code for the XBand with the aim of reviving the service.

The Sega Saturn Netlink League has been doing their best to recreate the service with the source code. As of now, the service has been successfully revived via emulation. The next step in their mission plan is to convert their work onto the original hardware.

As soon as the service is ready for use, we will let you know. In the meantime, you might want to hunt down an XBand in advance.
