Video Of The Upcoming PSIO (Project PlayStation Input Output) SD Card ISO Loader In Action

If you didn't already catch our earlier coverage of the PSIO, a team of Australian enthusiasts are currently building a device which will load PlayStation 1 games directly from SD cards. Up until now all we have had to go on is word of mouth and the occasional photograph, however, the developers have just released a video of the device in action.

To think we could soon store a selection of PlayStation 1 classics on a memory card and never insert another game disc again is quite something. The idea might not be new and something we've grown accustomed to with the plethora of flash cartridges readily available, however, the early selection of CD based platforms from the 32-bit era have been lacking alternative backup solutions - something the PSIO will soon address.

This newly uploaded video showcases an original PlayStation 1 - without a disc in sight - running Namco's iconic Klonoa via the PSIO, which is inserted into the console's rear. By the looks of it and the stream of code running, there is plenty more to be done. Nevertheless we're left further anticipating this upcoming device even more in the hope of playing our favourites, Resident Evil, Final Fantasy, Chrono Cross and Point Blank without taking them off their cosy position on the shelf.

IMHO this is one of the most exciting developments in a long time. Sure the flash carts and everdrives are great, but the same functionality for a CD-based console is awesome! Bring on the Saturn, PS2, DC & NGC variants... ;)
