Using The OUYA & Retrode As A Retro Gaming Console

Using-The-OUYA-ANd-Retrode-As-A-Retro-Gaming-ConsoleSo the OUYA is starting to arrive and is promising quite a lot for gamers around the world. Retro gamers, however, have a lot more to be anticipating with this Android based system. Once connected to a Retrode USB adapter, you'll be free to plug in any classic video game cartridge and get gaming.

For those unfamiliar with this so called Retrode, it's USB adapter which features both a Sega Mega Drive and Super Nintendo cartridge slot. After inserting a game cartridge into either one of these bays, the device you're connected to (for example, your PC or OUYA in this case) will see an external drive which contains the game's ROM and, if applicable, its save file. Further expanding upon this additional adapters are available to convert the Mega Drive slot to accept Nintendo 64, Master System and even Game Boy cartridges.

Having recently invested in an OUYA, blogger Hunter Davis decided to see if the many Android retro game emulators out there could read retro game cartridges via the Android console. Much to his surprise the Retrode simply popped up in the list of attached devices on the OUYA, allowing Davis to browse to a Super Mario 64 ROM file in the Mupen64 emulator.

While it may be a more costly alternative to actually playing an original console in your living room, this alternative method allows you to store a plethora of systems in one unit, all accessible through the same game pad.
