Upcoming Project Hermes: Expand Your Commodore CD32 Into An Amiga A1200 Equivalent

Project-Hermes-CD32-ExpansionAs Amiga gamers will tell you, the CD32 console has plenty going for it where games are concerned, but when it comes to actually getting the most out of a Commodore system, you really need an A1200. While there are adapters out there that bring the home computer's advantages over to the console like the Paravision SX1, they don't come cheap. Knowing this, one gamer has begun work on Project Hermes, a low cost alternative to bringing the power back to the CD32.

If you're wondering what the Paravision SX1 actually is, it's a an expansion board for the Amiga CD32 which effectively tells the console to behave like its computer counterpart. The board not only gives the console the extra juice needed to run Workbench and the rest, but it also provides space for memory expansion, hard drives, floppy drives, and also accessories such as keyboards. The main bonus with such a device is that you can boot up the original games from a hard drive (or compactflash card), something with also allows you to play games that never quite reached the Amiga CD32.

Project Hermes, Ian Steadman's latest project, aims to replicate all the features of the Paravision SX1, only at a much cheaper price. Despite there being a long journey ahead, Steadman has been keeping the community up to date with his work over at his development blog. At this point in time Project Hermes is expected to be sold at £120, although no release date is set as of yet.
