Unreleased Super Nintendo Mouse Game 'Sound Factory' Prototype Discovered

Super-Nintendo-Sound-Factory-DiscoveredHave you ever felt that Nintendo failed to get the most out of its 16-bit Mouse accessory? The Super Nintendo peripheral was only compatible with a mere 62 games, a large number of which were Japanese exclusives. One lucky retro gamer has recently discovered a prototype cartridge containing the long lost title Sound Factory, a game which was meant to debut with the accessory, however, soon found itself cancelled in favour of Mario Paint.

This unique title was meant to utilise the Super Nintendo Mouse by providing a selection of interactive musical experiences on screen. The first mini-game, Pix Quartet had you drawing various shapes for several musical bugs to walk over, each making sound when their feet touched your creation. Beat Hopper on the other hand was a more arcadey offering mixing both Q-Bert and a synthesiser together, tasking you with bouncing between the various musical platforms before they faded away. The last game in the bundle was Star Fly, an arranger similar to that found in Mario Paint, only much more abstract using the many twinkles in the night sky.

As fantastic as these tools are, you can almost see why Nintendo chose Mario Paint instead - a much easier and more creative alternative starring their flagship character. While Sound Factory may have remained unreleased, the creator of the game Toshio Iwai ended up re-using most of his ideas years later when working on the PC game SimTunes.

While it's yet to be known whether the new owner of this prototype will be sharing the game's code, they have uploaded a video to YouTube showcasing the missing title in action.
