Unreleased ‘Sonic Xtreme’ Now Playable On Sega Saturn

Sonic-Xtreme-Unofficial-Sega-Saturn-Port-ReleasedLate last month Sega fans were finally treated to a playable version of Sonic Xtreme, a long lost title in the blue hedgehog’s history. Although arriving as a Windows port, the team behind the project have finally figured out how to get the dated code running on the Saturn - something which you can now experience yourself.

With Sega trying everything possible to bring Sonic into the realm of 3D, this playable version of Sonic Xtreme is more commonly known as being the fish-eye lens variation of the title. Originally set to hit the 32-bit console during the Winter months of 1996, Sega Technical Institute’s development was brought to an abrupt halt following various issues and an unimpressed Hayao Nakayama.

As much as it pains us to say it, having played these recently released demos of Sega’s unfinished code it’s clear to see why Sonic Xtreme remained unreleased. Although technically ambitious the spirit of Sonic The Hedgehog is lacking from the game - as is the speed and excitement of earlier titles.

Nevertheless we’re amazed at what the efforts of the preservation community have managed to pull off. Taking unfinished game code and recompiling into something retro gamers can sample on their Sega Saturn consoles is nothing short of incredible. By the looks of it the team behind this revival are hoping to tidy up the game’s code and hopefully recreate some of the levels shown off in early tech demos.

Those interested should head on over to the project’s page at SonicRetro to find out more.
