Unreleased Nintendo NES Prototype ROM Of Sunsoft's 'Dino Hockey' Released Online

Dino-Hockey-NES-Prototype-ROMRetro game preservationists take note! Yet another unreleased and unfinished title has surfaced online as a downloadable ROM, this time round it's Sunsoft's cancelled prehistoric sports simulator for the Nintendo NES, Dino Hockey. While the game might not be in the most playable state, who can refuse taking to the ice as an extinct monster?

Dino Hockey is quite a notable release in the prototype world for a number of reasons. For one, there is next to no mention at all of this game anywhere to date in gaming literature, magazines or the internet for that matter. The only trace of information regarding this title hails from an older issue of Gamepro magazine, one where their journalists got a sneak peek of the title in action at Summer CES 1991.

Secondly, this is such an early build from Sunsoft that it borders on being almost unplayable. Not only does the game lack any sort of AI or action, but should you skate off too far in the wrong direction your Nintendo NES (or emulator) will instantly crash.

Nevertheless the arrival of this early Dino Hockey prototype ROM is a pleasure to see. While we might not be able to go crazy and enjoy seeing several primitive reptiles hit the ice using a turtle as a puck, we can at least fantasise about what could have been from what we can see here. And who knows, one day the (presumably more complete) version Gamepro reported on could turn up too.
