Unreleased Mega Drive Port Of ‘Putty Squad’ ROM Leaked Online

Putty-Squad-Mega-Drive-Prototype2013 was an interesting year for fans of the Amiga, as System 3’s long lost epic Putty Squad was finally released to the public. Further complimenting this news was the arrival of a Mega Drive prototype containing a port of the game, one which sold for a massive AU $1,390. Nearly two years on, the owners of this unreleased Sega cartridge have kindly released a ROM of the game online for free.

Upon providing the game to Mega Drive fanatics, Sega-16 member Mad Moham has also provided an interesting write up regarding the game and its leftover debug codes to skip levels. Going by the on-going discussion it would appear the game is in an almost complete state, however, it’s lacking an ending and sound effects. Furthermore this Mega Drive port of Putty Squad is nothing more than a port, as the exact same control scheme as the Amiga version remains - with only a single button of the 16-bit control pad put to use.

Issues aside we’re gifted yet another slice of retro gaming history that’s been amiss for many years. While the Super Nintendo release may be the one to play today, be sure to check out what the Mega Drive had coming before its inevitable cancellation by Ocean Software.

Update: It would appear that the Putty Squad Mega Drive ROM has since been removed from the Sega-16 thread, but has since popped up in other places.

I see they managed to make the game run at 50fps on the MD. It only runs at 25fps on the A1200.
