Unreleased Japanese Nintendo NES 'Parody World: Monster Party' Prototype Creeps Onto eBay

Monster-Party-Japanese-PrototypeAs far as unfinished and unreleased Nintendo NES prototypes go, one which is often brought to discussion is the cancelled Japanese version of Monster Party. The American version of this obscure platformer has since become a cult classic for its homage to horror films, with plenty of notable references to flicks of a bygone time. The Japanese version, however, is a completely different story...

Following the discovery of some magazine screenshots of the unreleased Japanese version, gamers soon learnt that Japan was instead set to see a much darker and morbid adventure on the 8-bit system. Several years later, a prototype of this Japanese version surfaced on Yahoo Auctions fetching a massive ¥438000 (approx £2,500), ending up in a private collector's hands.

As great as the discovery of a prototype cartridge was, this unreleased alternative to the US release of Monster Party remains out of reach for gamers worldwide. No ROM of Parody World: Monster Party exists online, although there is hope.

Several days ago a second copy of this Japanese prototype surfaced on eBay - one which has already seen a flurry of bids. Whether or not the prospective owner(s) of this untold piece of video game history will eventually share the game's code only time will tell. In the meantime, the eBay seller has kindly shared a good selection of game footage from this prototype for everyone to finally get a closer look at why Parody World: Monster Party ended up being canned.

They're bastards for not sharing it with the world. This is one of my favorite Famicom/Nes games. Oh well, guess I'll just keep enjoying the standard release. Doesn't seem THAT much different. Did you know that this game had somewhat of an influence on Silent Hill? Notice the melee attacks against odd monsters, the alternate/nightmare world transition, the horrific implications...
