Unreleased Arcade Shmup ‘Wing Force’ Located & MAME ROM Preserved

Wing-Force-Arcade-MAME-ROMAtlus are well known for their prolific output in the RPG genre, but their roots spread out into various other areas of gaming history. Believe it or not but the Japanese game developers were gearing up the release of an all new vertical shooter for the arcades known as Wing Force in 1993, however, it’s been missing in action - at least until now!

Having appeared on Yahoo Auctions Japan late last month, a PCB of this long lost shooter quickly became a locked on target of a fierce bidding war. Ending at a massive ¥301,000 (around the £1,750 mark), arcade collector and Shmups.org member Shou pledged to not only win the auction, but to preserve it for future generations using arcade emulators such as MAME.

Within a matter of days of the auction finishing, Shou stuck to his promise and the first emulated screenshots of the game in action began surfacing. MAME developer Luca Elia has already updated the emulator to run the game, leaving just the game’s ROM to surface online for all to enjoy. While we’re sure it’ll be in the usual places anytime soon, a full playthrough of the game has been uploaded to YouTube.
