Unreleased Atari 7800 Port Of 'Toki' Discovered & Due For Release

Toki-Atari-7800-Prototype-DiscoveredWhat's not to love about a game starring a magical ape battling an onslaught of jungle beasts with a rapid fire mouth? Toki is one of those arcade classics everyone's familiar with, but believe it or not the widely ported title was also due to arrive on another retro console. The unreleased Atari 7800 port of Toki has recently been discovered and is supposedly due to be made available to retro gamers in some shape or form in the near future.

While many will argue that the Mega Drive re-imagining is probably the best to play away from the coin-op, it's great seeing how other developers of yesteryear reworked arcade titles to different hardware. The Atari 7800 offering, however, is quite an interesting one as next to no record of its development seems to exist, and furthermore, it was supposedly due to hit the shops in 1993 - a whole four years after the arcade release, and two after its many other ports.

As of speaking the Toki Atari 7800 prototype is in the hands of Beta Phase Games, a team dedicated to preserving long lost Atari data. According to their recent post on AtariAge, the team are currently exploring options and avenues to get Toki into the hands of gamers, whether that be a physical cartridge release or a playable ROM file. Either way, stay tuned as we await yet another adventure rescuing Miho from the grasps of evil.
