Despite an overwhelming demand from fans for a follow up, the Dreamcast's iconic series Shenmue has been somewhat forgotten by Sega. With just over a decade since the last official release arrived, it would appear that fans have decided to take matters into their own hands. Believe it or not but a HD remake of Shenmue is in the works.
All the way over in Korea, a talented developer/artist by the name of NcoonKid has been busy away with Ryo Hazuki's adventure. Using the extracted 3D environments from the 1999 classic, NcoonKid has updated the overall look and feel of Yokosuka to match that of modern standards. Using the Unreal Engine, Shenmue has never looked better.
As stunning as the screenshots and video footage of this creation look, we're trying to hold back our excitement. Given how deep and expansive Shenmue is (and was for its time), we're unsure exactly how far this project will get with a single person working on it. Nevertheless it's without a doubt an eye opener showcasing what really could be done with the series today.
