If you haven’t already seen the news, Nintendo has teamed up with Apple to release an endless runner for mobile devices in the near future. While this new release might lack the true spirit of Nintendo, one retro gamer has decided to adapt the freemium style gameplay and bring it back to the Nintendo 64.
Super Mario Run 64 is the latest ROM hack from Kazeshin which has somehow managed to convert the game into a 2.5D platformer with a single button control scheme. Simply using A to jump, you’re tasked with a tricky level containing 100 obtainable coins and the aim of not missing a single jump.
While this ROM hack might be missing the magic of the full immersive 3D experience, it is interesting seeing how these new concepts work on the original hardware. The Super Mario Run 64 ROM hack can be downloaded through the game’s release trailer on YouTube in the video description.
And as for Nintendo’s upcoming mobile game - we can only hope that sales help fund the next generation of gaming for Mario and the gang.
