If there’s any retro gaming community that’s completely devoted to their cause, it’s the Resident Evil fan base. From the preservation of unreleased titles to fan-made restorations of long lost content, the collective community have put forward some incredible offerings to retro gamers. The latest arrival is an all new episodic spin-off to Resident Evil 2 known as Mortal Night which uses the original PC port’s engine.
While anything but official or endorsed by Capcom, Mortal Night aims to provide a follow up and spin-off story to the events that occurred in Raccoon City during Resident Evil 2. Taking control of a USS agent, your task is to both locate Hunk and Sherry Birkin from within the depth of the infested city. This will see you returning to countless familiar settings, all of which featuring an all new twist.
The first and most notable change worth mentioning about Mortal Night is that it casts away the ability to save your game. Having since been broken down into several different episodes (all of which accessible from the get go), the emphasis is placed onto survival - something which is anything but certain. Along the way you’ll encounter plenty of familiar enemies, all new items, and the shocking arrival of zombie hordes. If you thought the gathering of the living dead before were tricky, wait till you see how many of these evil beings are crammed into a single location at times.
Having used the original PC game to build this unofficial follow up, the modder behind Mortal Night has suggested that you’ll need to have a system running Windows 7 or below to experience the game. Those interested will be pleased to know that Resident Evil Mortal Night can now be download from the game modder’s official website, along with instructions on how to load the game.
