Treasure's Saturn Shmup Radiant Silvergun Now Available on XBLA

Gamers unwilling to drop a three-digit sum on a single video game, rejoice! Treasure's infamously expensive Saturn shoot-em-up, Radiant Silvergun, is finally available to all and sundry on Xbox Live Arcade for 1200 MSP.

Radiant Silvergun is the latest Treasure title to get a digital re-release on XBLA, joining the likes of Gunstar Heroes and Ikaruga (and, in October, Guardian Heroes) but is probably the one most people have been anticipating simply because of how expensive the Saturn port is (you can thank eBay for that, naturally).

Originally released in arcades for the Saturn-based S-TV board then subsequently ported to the Saturn, Radiant Silvergun was, surprisingly, Treasure's first traditional vertical shoot-em-up, and much like Gunstar Heroes and Alien Soldier, your weapons are pretty over-the-top- you always have seven at any one time (including the bullet-eating Radiant Sword which can double up as a bomb once powered up) and you'll need to use all of them (even the reverse shot) to survive the enemy onslaught and solve the mystery of The Stone-Like. In classic Treasure tradition, the boss battles are arguably the main attraction- RS lets you pick them apart one-by-one for extra points, and even offers advice before fighting them (the most important being, of course, BE PRAYING). Throw in a colour-coded chain system, an inventive level-up system for your weapons and hidden dogs (no, really) and you have quite a robust shoot-em-up that, ideally, everyone should play. And now they can!

This new version contains the arcade mode and the story mode (which saves your weapon levels and contains animated cut-scenes) just like the Saturn release, and also includes stuff you'd expect from an XBLA port, including optional remastered visuals, online co-op, replay saving, score leaderboards and achievements (and yes, one of them is beating the game on one credit, so you'd better get practicing). There's even a new mode based on Ikaruga (which apparently has to be unlocked by having at least one achievement from the XBLA version of Ikaruga).

Wait, what do I put in this box again? Oh, it's about me. I like playing weird and unusual games- the sort you're likely to forget about- and I hope you like reading about them because they're what I write about. And game trivia too. Please look forward to it!

Excellent, and about bloody time! I think it's good that developers can make money out of old rare games - plus it could well help with the price of the original. Ooooh perhaps a follow up article on the price of Radiant Silvergun before and after the release?

My favourite Shmup. It's a great game and I think it deserves its status as one of the best examples of the genre. Even though I'm lucky enough to own the Saturn original (only because I purchased it for £45 new when originally released), I'm still tempted to get the XBLA version for the extras that come with it
