Touhou 'Bad Apple' Pushes The Sega Mega Drive / Genesis To Its Limits

Touhou-Bad-Apple-Pushes-The-Sega-Mega-Drive-Genesis-To-Its-LimitsWe're all familiar with the countless demoscene animations that get the most out of Commodore 64 and Amiga hardware, but what does the Sega Mega Drive have to show where technical feats are concerned? The Touhou favourite Bad Apple has been ported to the 16-bit system, going bodly where Sega never dared venture.

Bad Apple? Don't worry, we were unfamiliar with the phenomena before this technical demo surfaced. To get all of us up to scratch, one of the bullet hell scrolling shooters from the Touhou series' - the fourth release to be precise, Lotus Land Story - featured a popular audio track known as Bad Apple. Many years later, a remix track was created featuring backing vocals, which was then also remixed to accompany a rather impressive 3D silhouette animation.

This animation soon found itself being remixed again, only this time round it was being stylised to look and sound as if it was coming from video game hardware. Inspired by the sight of Bad Apple pretending to run on consoles, Stephane Dallongeville set out to bring this popular meme to the Sega Mega Drive without the use of any video trickery.

After what we can only presume was countless hours of extensive programming and experimentation, a Bad Apple Sega Mega Drive ROM has been created, which even works on the original hardware. Having never seen the Sega Mega Drive imitate fluid video motion and CD quality audio without the need of a Sega Mega CD speaks volume - potentially taking the console to its absolute upper limits.

If you happen to own a Sega Mega Drive flash cartridge such as the Everdrive MD or Mega Everdrive, Stephane Dallongeville has released a selection of ROMs for different devices for you to try out.

I'm surprised you've never heard about Bad Apple before. The Famicom / NES version of the demo was created a few years ago.
