Tomb Raider Comic to Lead Directly Into Sequel

TRcomicSquare Enix's recent Tomb Raider reboot will continue on in comic book form. But rather than be a mere tie-in, the new series will be completely canonical and even lead directly into the sequel.

Speaking to Kotaku, which in tern was picked up by GameSpot, series writer Gail Simone said "we start just a few weeks after the [new] game. It will be Tomb Raider canon, and lead directly into the sequel. This is what got me excited; we get to be part of Lara Croft history."

Simone has said that she is a fan of Tomb Raider, loving the "classic, cool Lara." However, the comic series will stick very close to the origin-tale roots of the 2013 reboot. "The biggest difference is the game told a claustrophobic story in an isolated setting. We are going globetrotting." Simone is also freinds with Tomb Raider game writer, Rhianna Pratchett. "What a joy it is to count [Pratchett] as a friend," said Simone. "She is simply an astonishing storyteller...the writing in the Tomb Raider game is so natural and believable and convincing, you really feel Lara's pain and struggle. A lot of that is pure Rhianna."

Pratchett is no stranger to comics herself, having written a short graphic novel that acted as a prequel to the 2013 Tomb Raider reboot that was bundled with pre-orders via certain retailers and is also available digitaly.

Fans of Lara need not have any fear that this will be a quick cash in. While the Tomb Raider franchise has already proven that it translates well to comics, Gail Simone is something of comic book royalty and is easily one of the most popular writers of modern comics. Having worked on critically acclaimed runs for Wonder Woman, Birds of Prey and most recently Batgirl as part of DC Comics large New 52 initiative, Simone is known for her writing of strong, independent women that has gained her a league of fans.

The new Tomb Raider comic series, which is being published by Dark Horse, is set to début on February 26, 2014.
