Timeless Super Nintendo Soundtracks Adapted For The Sega Mega Drive Sound Chip

Nintendo-Soundtracks-on-Mega-Drive-SoundchipWhile the console wars continue to rage on with more modern contenders, the ferocity of the fight is nothing like it used to be. Given that just about every game released today arrives on every platform going, there’s not really much to battle over. Several decades ago the exclusive titles hitting both the Super Nintendo and Sega Mega Drive respectively left gamers on both sides - but what if these titles actually saw release on their rival platforms?

While we’ll never see Super Mario World or Sonic The Hedgehog on their opposing platforms, at least not officially, one musican has decided to fill our imagination with hope. Taking the iconic sound chip from a Mega Drive - the Yamaha YM2612 - Horus Curcino has composed various memorable melodies from the Super Nintendo and Nintendo NES’s back catalogue as if they were being played on Sega’s hardware.

The end result of this experiment in music is rather magical, although confusing too - in the best way possible. Given how recognisable the audio output is for each and every one of these Nintendo consoles, hearing the likes of F-Zero, Donkey Kong Country, and Super Mario World chime the Mega Drive style is will puzzle any retro gamer’s brain.

But the real question here is, which console do these melodies sound better on?
