The Year Of Luigi Continues With Unofficial Nintendo NES Release ‘Dr Luigi’

Dr-Luigi-Nintendo-NES-ROM-HackLast year saw Nintendo celebrating their under-appreciated sidekick Luigi by gifting the green plumber the spotlight he deserves. While the official tributes may have now drawn to a close, a dedicated fan has taken it upon himself to keep things going with an impressive Nintendo NES ROM hack - Dr Luigi.

Taking Gunpei Yokoi’s 1990 release Dr Mario, a member of the site known as Shugo has modified the game’s code and visuals to remove any trace of Luigi’s brother. The end result is surprisingly good, although exactly what you’d expect - an alternative take on a classic puzzle.

Although Nintendo's official take on Dr Luigi for the Wii U may be more polished, this Nintendo NES ROM hack is by far a more appealing choice for retro gamers.

As usual, to enjoy this fan translation patch you will need to have an original Dr Mario Nintendo NES/Famicom ROM file to which you can apply this patch to. Full instructions on how to patch this ROM can be found within the download, or you can refer to this handy ROM patching guide on YouTube.
