Konami's Coin-Op Brawler The Simpsons Arcade Finally Returning To Home Consoles

Fans of four-player scrolling brawlers, rejoice! A leaked list of Xbox achievements seems to confirm that Konami's multiplayer brawler The Simpsons, based on America's favourite dysfunctional family, is finally being given a home port (well, a faithful one, anyway) after 20 years.

Released in 1991 while the second season of the show was being broadcast in America, The Simpsons (usually referred to as The Simpsons Arcade) is one of Konami's license-based brawlers where, as either Homer, Marge, Bart or Lisa, you have to fight your way through Springfield to rescue Maggie, kidnapped by Waylon Smithers (?) after a bungled jewellery store robbery (?!). Although it plays similarly to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles brawlers, it has a few extra mechanics like weapons (including a slingshot and Santa's Little Helper), team-attacks when two players stand close together, and mini-games between certain stages. Although fun enough in single player, The Simpsons Arcade really comes alive when played with friends, especially since the game will bump up the enemy count depending on how many players are in the game. Although ported to the PC and Commodore 64 at the time, neither of these ports were terribly accurate, so fans have been waiting for the ultimate version for quite some time.

That time has finally come. Late last year the game was given a rating by the Australian Classification Board with the developer noted as Backbone Entertainment (responsible for most of the XBLA Konami ports), and now a list of achievements for the Xbox 360 version seems to confirm the game is heading for consoles (although whether it's heading for the Playstation Network as well isn't known yet). The achievements also hint at some of the extras in this new port, most importantly that the Japanese version of the game- which includes nuclear bomb weapons and a different scoring system- is selectable, similar to the X-Men port from last year.

Since the game hasn't been officially announced yet, there's no release date, but considering the achievements have been leaked, it should be imminent. We call dibs on Homer!

Wait, what do I put in this box again? Oh, it's about me. I like playing weird and unusual games- the sort you're likely to forget about- and I hope you like reading about them because they're what I write about. And game trivia too. Please look forward to it!
